Both are flawed. |
Don't disagree...but they should consider still ranking all these schools and maybe color code them all the same and just indicate that they had to apply some of their own analysis to solve for lack of data. |
Agree the U.S. News rankings are a joke, not only because of methodology but because they have an extremely low response rate |
My kid is currently a junior at Wake. For her class, who applied to the business major last year, the acceptance rate was indeed below 60 percent. |
Adding that like UVA, kids who don’t get the business school generally become Econ majors. |
Fair enough. So pivot once that is clear with a foundation. No one cares if you took 4 Accounting classes -- most smart people can learn all of that content in a few weeks and it is not a particularly intellectual exercise. Success will lie in who knows how to think, write, and communicate ideas. |
Wake is kind of like rolling admission. Just because you are not accepted say by Spring of Sophomore year, you can re-apply the following semester. Like 90% eventually do get accepted. |
You seem to be referring to a fairly small subset of jobs in investment banking of consulting or PE where they will hire the Harvard history major and then teach them accounting. I get that...but there really aren't that many jobs in the grand scheme of things in those companies (and there are a not insignificant number of smaller firms that in fact want only Wharton, Stern, et al grads because they don't have extensive training programs). Understand of course they will only hire history majors from like 10-15 schools and then train them on accounting, finance et al. However, there are companies hiring millions of accountants who in fact aren't spending time hiring kids who don't have an accounting background. At least right now, there is still a big shortage of accountants. Even if you are correct that they could teach a smart kid accounting...you agree it's not intellectually stimulating so why would they bother with someone who shows no interest in the field? |
I’ve never heard that and my kid attends Wake. Most kids aren’t even on campus the following semester, they are taking a pass/fail semester abroad. |
All rankings are flawed, but at least Poets and Quants works to get useful data. |
That’s fine if that’s your opinion. |

I don't know why you guys are arguing endlessly about whether UVA is a better school.
The real issue at hand is that McIntire has become a total crap shoot admission. They will probably take 25% of internal applicants this year and many of the former engineering, pre-med, etc grinders are now in the pipeline (everyone in the universe wants to work in finance in 2026) so to get in you better be at the very top of the UVA cohort. |
Sounds like UVA might not be a better school after all. |
No, the better schools do not do direct admit because they do t have to and because they want to deject from a more mature student body = a better reputation. Google why top tier business schools do not auto-admit and you will read: “Top-tier business schools do not use automatic admission because their admissions process is based on a holistic evaluation of a candidate's potential to succeed and contribute to the school's reputation, rather than just academic metrics. Because these institutions are highly selective, with demand far exceeding the limited spots available, they rely on a rigorous, selective process to build a diverse, high-performing cohort. Here is why top business schools do not have auto-admit: (It goes on) |
Yes. Poets and Quants ranks UVA business no 4 in the nation |
