I am a late 40s woman and after some negative experiences I stopped granting dates to any man who wouldn't drive to my neighborhood. It just means that are not that into me, or transactional and will be calculating 50/50 in everything we bring into the relationship

Let me guess.. still single?

Op here. This is true! But I do want to drive and I was happy to drive to Arlington for a first meet. After that if we click I’d be okay going into the city for a nicer experience. But I was put off by his insistence to meet for the first time in DC on a rainy day.

Girl. If you insist on driving you cannot date people in DC proper. Stick with fellow suburnians.

It's this. We live in Dupont and venture out of the city only when needed which is rarely and I wouldn't give a second thought to things like parking. Stick with the suburbs.

I didn't mind if someone lived outside of it, as long as they were cool with coming in -- maybe their job or other reasons meant they needed to live in the suburbs. It's a personality thing.

One friend and I (both single and looking) were at a house party and we used to limit potential dates based on zip codes too. 20009/20036/20008 were perfect, 20007 was on the limits of acceptable. Yes, we were cads back then. But there were no smartphones and limited online dating, so you met people out at house parties and bars, meaning the person was already cool with being in the city as that's where you'd be making their acquaintance.

You sound like an absolute and complete loser.

DP. If you chose a suburban, car-based lifestyle, that is your choice. You can’t expect me to uber out to Fairfax for dates and I don’t want to hear you whine about parking in Dupont.

I'm a woman and I was the same. I lived and worked in DC and I wasn't going to venture to somewhere less cool for a date. But I was in my 20s with lots of options and lots of other young ppl near by. It wasn't much of a hindrance. I don't know how old OP is.

Same. Dude would have had to be a millionaire Abercrombie model to even drag me out to Clarendon.

OP clearly you were not sizzlingly attracted to him. No need for date 2.

What if we simplified it: whoever does the asking out is prepared to come to the other person’s location.

I have three guesses as to why:

1.) He wants you to come back to his place and if you have a car involved that is almost impossible to navigate easily.

2.) He wants to hook up but prefers you to come back to his place because he is too lazy to come out your way.

3.) He doesn't have a car and going to a non-metro location would reveal that.

I don’t kiss on first dates!

So he's not hot. Next.

What sort of grown ass man doesn't have a car? Besides losers, of course.

Agree

Many 'grown ass' men and women in DMV don't have cars. Kind of smart, if you think about it.

This is a plus in my book.

Crossing the river is a HUGE barrier for folks in DC for some reason. I lived in DC for 10 years and would never cross the river either. Unless one of you are willing to compromise, the relationship will not work.

Don't you have friends you can talk to about this?

I used to live in nyc and Boston. I would never travel. The guy would have to come near me. This was before apps though so I met the guys in real life.

“So Foggy Bottom is still too far for from Fairfax for me. Arlington would work better as it’s the mid point for both of us distance wise. If Arlington works for you I’m happy to meet, if not we can always connect another time.”

Arlington and Foggy Bottom are not that far from each other (on a nice day you can literally walk from one to the other), are you protesting on principle only?
