I just received a text at 2:56

Great planning MCPS

I just got the text. Unfortunately, MCPS does not know how to use proper punctuation, so the message is totally confusing!

Yeah, I usually get notified half a dozen different ways to, but this time the only way I knew was because my HS kid texted me. No texts, emails, Remind, nothing for either MCPS or the school.

I wouldn’t have seen the announcement on the website if kid hadn’t called. Hopefully elementary and middle schools were better about notifying families.

OMG can you all wait until COB before complaining that you didn't get a text? Then you'll get your dozen texts and complain about that!

If it didn’t involve today’s after-school activities, COB would be fine. But even 2:00 was already very last-notice, and not alerting families to the announcement until an hour after the decision was distributed to schools seems odd.

And I’ve never complained about all the notices. I signed up for them, so I could be sure I’d get at least one no matter what I was doing.

I've seen comms about all after-school activities cancelled, and another communication that activities after 5:30 are cancelled. Which is it?

The notice on cancellation of activities was crazy. Ours cancelled everything, not just starting at 530, with less than an hours notice.

Super crazy. So you’ll send kids home on buses at 3pm without contacting parents, and kids will be freezing outside houses where no one was expecting them.

Aren’t we talking about MS and HS kids who are coming home at regular times on days when there is no practice? I mean they do know how to get in their houses and they don’t need babysitters.

Good thing there's a lot of work from home feds here who can cover for neighborhood kids in an emergency.

Relax everyone. Why is everyone so concerned about after school activities getting canceled? Why so serious about winter sports or amc 8? My DC is also doing the amc 8, but honestly I don’t care if it happens or not. Its fine.

I mean, my kid goes to a magnet school and doesn't have a school bus stop in the neighborhood that he can walk home from. So if I didn't work from home, I wouldn't be able to get to the bus stop in time. I'm sure there are tons of parents in this predicament.

Not all families are comfortable with 6th and 7th graders being home alone and not all kids carry a key if the parent was planning to pick them up by car that day from the afterschool activity or was planning to be home prior to their activity bus arrival. Just because your kids are old school latchkey kids doesn’t mean everyone’s are.

OK but this is a thread about 1/22, not today's after school activities.

I think activities only canceled after 5:30 and just for today. There was no mention of any activities for tomorrow or Thursday.

I don't think the schools received accurate information about the 5:30 piece of the puzzle, so all activities were cancelled. It is a little annoying that this was not conveyed correct because the musical schedule is already rushed due to the late Spring break and they could have used today's rehearsal!

Yeah, same here. We called the school and they said all activities vs the official communication that 5:30 was the cutoff. Now we have unnecessary cancellations of auditions, rehearsals, etc.
