Perhaps HSPT scores play a role? Grades? Feeder schools?

We can score high on standardized tests too. My son scored in the 98th percentile. That said, Gonzaga accepts boys with a range of scores - and yes, lots of dumb legacy kids who are part of the country club set and go because that's where dad went.

African Americans make up 50% of DC, though.

Do you know any who wanted to go to Gonzaga but were denied admission?

Are you fishing for plaintiffs? You’ve asked twice, but nobody’s biting.

DP: I think PP is attempting to imply that the reason there are so few Black students at Gonzaga compared to the other DC Catholic high schools is because none apply, which, of course, is a silly circular argument.

Yes because obviously black kids should be expected to go to schools where they don’t want to go to make white people feel better.

Gonzaga is hard to get into for most students. Every year at our school there are boys with great grades, test scores and ECs who are full-pay that do not get admitted. No one has a guaranteed spot.

I have two AA boys that were both accepted into Gonzaga--stellar grades, recs, and HSPT scores. My DS was born and raised in DC and she could not get over the GZ of her day. Both boys decided against it on their own, but the reputation was def a topic of discussion for my DS and I. I know several other AA families who feel the same. I think this also affects GZs minority enrollment.

Thanks for this. I guess my question to GZ parents and administrators is, "If you know your school has a reputation for being unfriendly to Black students, despite being located in a predominantly Black city/neighborhood, is that something you think about and would like to change?"

+100 What is the school doing to encourage Black students to apply?

according to this thread the percentage of Gonzaga students is between 9% and 14%. The US population is 13% black. what is the the problem - why so many pages of debate?

Because clearly these don't care. SJC has a much higher rate of black students.

that sounds like a SJC problem more than a Gonzaga problem.

The better question is the DMV area, since Gonzaga students come from as far west as Loudon county and as far east as Annapolis. My guess is that the Black population in the DMV tracks the Gonzaga percentage pretty closely.

Go to the web page, they have a big section on DEI that lists 8-10 staff members devoted to DEI, lists endless DEI projects (such as one project shaming the school for its institutional connection to slavery), and shows the Gonzaga leadership posing with James Clyburn, a Black, left wing US Congressman. They have photos of Black students smiling happily alongside the White students, and using the photos as a sample, you would conclude the school is 30-40% Black. Does that answer your question?

According to 2021 American Community Survey, here are the demographics of the broader DMV:
edit
Non-Hispanic White: 43%
Black or African American: 24% (including African 5.4%, West Indian 1.2%, and Ethiopian 0.8%[30])
Hispanic or Latino: 17%
Asian: 11%
Mixed and other: 6%

I know. And it’s Catholic, not a popular religion for that particular demographic. It’s a private school, not a neighborhood school. It serves kids out in Bowie, Crofton, Stafford as well as the close-in suburbs and DC. It does so much charity work in the local community and even has a homeless center/soup kitchen on campus.

This is the last school people should be calling out for goodness sake.
