I'm Latino and Catholic and live in D.C. |
1/3 of the Catholics that you personally know in the DC area? |
35% of Gonzaga families receive financial aid. Pretty big financial commitment/tons of fundraising on Gonzaga’s part. |
I don't know all the Catholica on the D.C. area. Do you? |
|
The tuition is $30k/year and they don't have the financial aid budget that elite prep schools do to lure diverse students. Most black families cannot afford $30k/year out of pocket.
Plus, DC's majority-black Catholic middle schools have largely shut down. These were huge pipelines for Gonzaga for generations. Lots of black families in the DMV interested in Catholic school are looking at SJC. It is more diverse and more dynamic community. Gonzaga gives real "country club" vibes. |
African Americans make up 50% of DC, though. |
Do you know any who wanted to go to Gonzaga but were denied admission? |
| I live near DeMatha and it seems very diverse. Plus they’re so cute and unfailingly polite in my limited interactions with them. Without knowing a whole lot about it I would say anyone looking for a Catholic boys school locally should at least check it out. |
This pp must have a “Gonzaga” alert to come and post this country club comment on every single thread. There was a recent entire thread devoted to disproving this campaign. No need to attempt to disparage Gonzaga in an attempt to boost SJC. There’s a place for everyone |
You guys are using stats that aren't applicable to kids who go to a 30k/year private all male school. Many of these boys are white country club kids. It doesn't matter that "1/3 of Catholics in the U.S. are Latino.", that's not what's going on in this scenario. Your logic is a fallacy. |
So you're saying if Gonzaga's tuition was $4,000 less they'd double the number of Black kids they're serving? SJC is 20% Black and tuition is not materially less than Gonzaga's. The 9% enrollment is a choice made by the school, not the students. |
| 10 percent of Catholics in the District of Columbia are Black. https://www.prri.org/spotlight/racial-differences-among-catholics-in-washington-dc-nyc-and-philadelphia/#:~:text=Just%20under%20half%20(49%20percent,%2DPacific%20Islander%20(API). |
You're right, the real story here is Gonzaga's 7% Hispanic student population when 33% of D.C. Catholics are Hispanic. |
Yeah, this actually just proves that D.C.'s Catholic population is majority minority. |
Where does anyone say anything about doubling numbers based on tuition $? Gonzaga does not pull from the average Catholic home. It's not just about the cost. Many kids come from Arlington- do you know how many are not white? None. Gonzaga is a status symbol for rich white kids. Its not about Catholic kids. |
