My DCs are whipanic and they tend to gravitate towards any Spanish speakers.

My west coast friends called it Whexican (assuming people are from Mexico and not other countries)

There are definitely things my hapa friends talk about when it's mostly hapa group that they don't talk about when it's all asians + 1 hapa.

Hapa have a pretty good perspective on how racist everybody is.
We can really see cultural differences.
We code switch like it's a radio station.
We try to play down how much more attractive we are.

Wait, Hapas are less racist AND more attractive AND more humble??? Sounds like you guys are superior! Omg i feel so ashamed of my own race now

Hybrid vigor!

Same.

My husband always refers to himself as mixed white-Asian. He's never heard the term Wasian and although he's familiar with hapa, he doesn't use that either. Several of our son's HS friends are mixed. His college friends tend to be white or Asian but not both. West Coast.

I’m 50% and I’ve never heard the term.

Wait, is this phrase not commonly known?

I usually hear the term Hapa used.

Yes, I've been called Hapa too. Never called wasian.

That's because you're old. And or have no kids. And or they don't talk to you. (We don't know which of these options is the case.)

Don't be mean. Really. Just don't.

Hapa originated in Hawaii. Has it now been co-opted by incels?

It means part-Hawaiian.

no, it doesn’t

It's Hawaiian for "half."
My kids use both Wasian and Hapa to describe themselves and other Asian-White kids. Hapa is part of the everyday vocabulary in Hawaii and is most definitely not an insult or incel or right-wing in any way. It's also commonly used on the West Coast, not surprisingly. Wasian is used more commonly on the East Coast, but means the same thing as Hapa. FWIW, my kids consider themselves more Asian American than White. When tan, they are confused as Latin or Mexican.
As for Hapa/Wasians on campus, DS is in college in the Boston area, and there are a decent number, but far fewer than Asian-Asian American kids, and fewer than Asian students from Asia.

I don't see where PP said Hapa is less racist. Just has a better perspective.
I don't see where they implied humility. They do tend to have good eq.
And they're not just more attractive on average, they tend to be healthier too.

Hapa is also what Japanese and Philippino people use, not just Hawaiian folks.

Hapa is self identifying.

Wasain is more like latinx, identification from the outside.

As someone who grew up in Hawaii, "hapa" is indeed Hawaiian for "half." And by Hawaiian, I mean the language and not the ethnicity. Anyone from Hawaii, no matter what their ethnic background, uses the word Hapa to describe someone of mixed race, usually White and Asian. A lot of people in Hawaii are mixes of several ethnicities, and Hapa is used for all of them.
Hapa is not just self-identifying. It's a term that used by everyone to describe someone with multiple ethincities.
Wasian and Hapa are both terms used by my Asian-White kids. They tend to use the term Hapa when on the West Coast, and use Wasian when talking to their DC/East Coast cohort.

I must say, PP is not wrong. Almost every waisian I see is crazy good-looking. Not fair.

My husband and I used to call it Cauasian when we didn't know there was a term for it, but then started saying Whaisian when we moved to DC and realized there's an actual term for it.
