West coast calls it hapa. I first heard "Whasian" from my kids who went to MCPS. They are whasian.

CA calls it hapa, Pacific NW here and we called it mixed. No one I know between San Diego and Vancouver calls us Wasian. Fascinated that it’s a thing.

Wasian is not a thing, except among the white liberals of DC who need to give everyone a made up name for their perceived grouping.

This is not a DC thing.

Ask your kids.

Just asked. My HS daughter said everyone uses Wasian. Not at all an insult. She never heard of HAPA.

It’s common and non-derogatory in CA now, but only recently and only among younger people. My 16yo daughter calls herself wasian, and she has mentioned friends calling themselves lasian.

I believe most Gen Z know what 'Wasian' means, and my Wasian child hangs out with friends from all different racial backgrounds at school.

We're wasian. We grow more leg hair than our Asian dad.

My other dd has a mix of wasian and non-wasian friends. We live in an area that is almost 50% Asian so there’s also plenty of Chinese-Indian kids and Indian-white kids.

I’m the PNW PP and this surprises me! Unless you’re over on the Eastside, which is sort of the northern VA of the Seattle area? It’s so transient there that it makes sense that language from other parts of the country would arrive there first.

NYC, and the White/Asian kids all call themselves wasian and don’t think it’s racist. No one uses the term Happa in NYC, but I’ve heard that term from Californians a generation ago.

My kids are at MCPS and they are wasian. Everyone at least in their generation knows what this means and it's not offensive.

oh weird. i never thought about that.
meaning one super Asian looking kid and one super white kid?

Or spanish/middle eastern looking.

Genetics are interesting.

The girls tend to look more Mexican with lighter skin, which kinda makes sense because most Mexicans are mixed with native American blood, and they are descendants from Asia.

What??

? what what

My kids are wasian. I was speaking to another parent who has wasian kids, and wasian nieces/nephews. That parent was the one who mentioned this to me (that the girls can almost pass as Mexicans). My kid was really young at the time, so I hadn't noticed it. But, they showed me a pix of their wasian DD and nieces, and sure enough, they look kind of Mexican. They get Hispanic people speaking spanish to them in NYC.

My DCs are whipanic and they tend to gravitate towards any Spanish speakers.

My west coast friends called it Whexican (assuming people are from Mexico and not other countries)

Wait, is this phrase not commonly known?

I usually hear the term Hapa used.

There are definitely things my hapa friends talk about when it's mostly hapa group that they don't talk about when it's all asians + 1 hapa.

Hapa have a pretty good perspective on how racist everybody is.
We can really see cultural differences.
We code switch like it's a radio station.
We try to play down how much more attractive we are.

I heard a (white) mom at a local commuter rail station complaining that her (white) son was either one, or using that word. Mostly about his hair style -- white dreadlocks.

Never heard the term before and I have Waisan kids. Will have to ask them if they’ve heard the term.

Correct. (You really should get out of your bubble from time to time)

My son's girlfriend refers to herself as Swaisian (Swedish Asian) that was new to me. Whasian has been around for a long time.
