Are there brands for tween girls where the shorts aren't super short?

I drew a harder line on tops (I don’t allow anything that shows stomach at all or is low cut etc at this age).

I don’t think there is a right answer (and I don’t judge other parents by what they allow- it is hard) but IME you do have to pick your battles with things like this.

What is wrong with short tops or shorts? Teen boys like that look, and that’s totally normal.

Are we raising a generation of puritans?

Cool. My DD doesn’t need to choose her clothes based on what teen boys like. She is worth more than that.

I’m sure I’m get roasted for this but I bought my 12yo skimmer shorts and midi shorts from Children’s Place and she’s willing to wear them.

She is Greek and has super hairy legs so she actually likes having more of her legs covered to have to shave less, FWIW.

Also, the Sugar and Jade brand for tweens/teens from Children’s sells midi shorts.

No in actuality you are telling her the opposite.

If your daughter likes short shorts then who gives a crap what others think?

You are absurd.

What showing skin is wrong? What do you do at the beach? One piece only with shorts and a t shirt on top?

This whole thread is ridiculous.

Raise confident daughters people not girls who worry about what they wear.

PPs were specifically responding to the posters who told them to wear short shorts because teen boys liked it. There's a world of difference between wearing short shorts because you feel comfortable and confident that way and wearing them to get attention from teen boys. You seem to be talking about the former ("not girls who worry about what they wear"). Cool, cool. Telling them they should wear the short shorts because the attention from teen boys will make them feel confident? The opposite and NOT cool.

DP and my 12 year old was asking me about these. She's a fan of the stretch but hates the look of bike shorts, so this is her compromise. I'm the poster above who complained most shorts were too wide.

And to the point of all the PPs saying "raise your daughter not to care what other people think," my 12 year old doesn't mind that these aren't the most fashionable thing. She likes what she likes, and longer shorts is it. Isn't that not caring what other people think?

I think a big point is to learn that the beach is different from a school. As long as they're using sunscreen and reapplying regularly, we are very flexible at the beach. But for school sitting in shared plastic desk chairs and the bus, there should not be cheeks hanging out or bare stomachs.

Same. For various reasons, my 13yo daughter prefers a slightly longer short. She isn't 'cool' though - she plays the clarinet and isn't dating yet (that I know of).

She doesn't care what other girls wear or don't wear, but this thread is specifically about looking for shorts that are alternatives to the super short options.

My daughter has several pairs of these twill ones in black. They're comfortable, cheap and you can actually just roll them to whatever length you want.

Umm, actually, yes that is what my DD does. She is super light skinned and skin cancer runs in our family. She keeps somewhat covered up, even at the beach. It's not ridiculous to want to cover up, whatever the reason is.

Why do you care what people are wearing at the beach.

You are the one who is absurd thinking that a girl who wears longer shorts, or a one-piece bathing suit is NOT confident. My daughter is smart, athletic and talented, regardless of whether you see her in a bikini or a one piece at the beach.

Anonymous wrote:We haven't had this issue; maybe we're defining "really short" differently? But we've always found plenty of options among the too short ones.

For more of a structured style, DD (12) likes American Eagle - the "Midi" style is a good in between, IMO. I don't think I could ever convince her to wear full on bermudas.

https://www.ae.com/us/en/p/women/low-rise-shorts/low-rise-midi-shorts/ae-next-level-low-rise-denim-midi-short/1332_7777_970?menu=cat4840004

And for those that care about brand names (and my dd is increasingly in that category, so not a statement of judgment), Lululemon has plenty of options. I agree that the shortest Hotty Hot shorts are darn short, but I don't see what's inappropriate about something like this: https://shop.lululemon.com/p/women-shorts/Track-That-HR-Lined-Short-5/_/prod11130485?color=38470

or this:

or this:

I agree that those Lululemon ones you posted are fine for length!

But $78 for a pair of polyester shorts for my 13yo just is not in my budget, unfortunately.

Says who? My teens school has no dress code.

Fact is most girls prefer what’s in style and it has nothing to do with boys.

As long as privates are covered, my teen has autonomy to dress how she likes. And last time I checked the place where the umbilical cord was cut, isn’t a private part. Either are legs or arms.

You parents are so uptight it’s unreal.

We got our young teen girl Stitch Fix, and she has been pretty happy with the selection. They tend to send her more conservative clothes because that’s what she likes.

The problem is the girls with no fashion sense but think they do because they buy Lululemon and wear Uggs. They are most likely to ridicule other girls who are wearing “baby clothing”

DP. And they should be the ones carrying the burden. Getting the worthless cool kids in trouble should be the focus, not turning into their little bjtches.
