Are there brands for tween girls where the shorts aren't super short?

This. A 9 year old is definitely not a tween, my kid turned 9 in the 2nd half of 3rd grade! Although as a parent of a tween (12) I like perusing the threads here that are specific to teens to get a sense of what lies ahead.

That doesn’t make them a tween. That honestly makes them the kids of parents who want to call their 9 year olds tweens because they think it’s cute. My kid would not have been able to fit into Lulu hottie hots when she was 9, and I sure as hell wasn’t buying my 9 year old 70 dollar shorts!

We haven't had this issue; maybe we're defining "really short" differently? But we've always found plenty of options among the too short ones.

For more of a structured style, DD (12) likes American Eagle - the "Midi" style is a good in between, IMO. I don't think I could ever convince her to wear full on bermudas.

This may sound weird but the shorter athletic shorts (hottie hots and the athleta run free 2.5) don’t bother me. My 12 year old’s ass isn’t hanging out of them (she is only 5 feet tall) and she actually also wears them when she runs, not just with a tank top or a t shirt that makes it look like she’s not wearing shorts. Ass hanging out is where I draw the line, the shorts otherwise being short though isn’t something I’m stressing over.

I'm 5'0" and all torso. 2.5" inseam shorts never looked short on me, even in an era when short-shorts were popular.

My 12 year old is 5'4" and all legs. Same inseam looks very different on her. Rear is still not hanging out and I would probably be fine with it, but she prefers a longer inseam so that's what we do.

My problem is the width of the shorts. They're so wide!

Yes, the width is kind of crazy. My DD prefers still wearing the size 9/10 instead of the 12 because the 12 is too wide. Since she’s not super tall she can get away with the 9/10 not looking too short.
