| Drivers are required to stop for stopped school buses to reduce the chances that a driver will hit a child who is getting on or off a school bus. That seems like a worthy purpose to me, even though it might delay me in my car by a whole minute or possibly even two. |
Well duh. But we're talking about a six lane busy major artery with dividers and traffic lights and not some little two lane neighborhood cul de sac. Most drivers are focused on the lights and the other five lanes of traffic and the turning cars. Stopping suddenly for something that no one else sees will invariably lead to accidents. That particular bus stop should be located within the driveway of that particular apartment building. It's River and Little Falls. It's not a good a place for cars to suddenly stop in the opposing lanes. They will invariable get hit. |
The road is so complicated that drivers are unable to see a big yellow bus with a strobe light on top and red blinking lights? That's worrisome. I hope the state takes a good look at that road, because it's obviously far too dangerous for drivers to be able to drive safely on. In fact, maybe the state should just shut it down until they've made the necessary safety fixes. |
We shouldn't have six lane major arteries in the first place. More of you need to be using mass transit. |
|
It’s not six lanes and there are no dividers.
Just slow down, Zippy. “But that’s sooo hard!!!” No, it’s really not. |
. +1. The laws are there to protect the students and children. Get a grip. And stop complaining! I’m thrilled when a scofflaw gets a ticket |
Red lights, stop signals, dedicated turning lanes, blinkers, and speed limits are also there to promote traffic safety but god forbid a commuter into DC should actually be bothered to leave for work on time, and instead try to drive like a maniac. God forbid they get home 5 minutes late. Again, commuters - stop making your problems everyone else's problems. |
The bus is stopping in front of apartment building, which is where the kids live and is their neighborhood. It may not be as quaint as your "two lane neighborhood cul de sac" but it is the neighborhood where the kids live and they deserve to be just as safe as the kids who live in SFHs in the could desk neighborhoods. If you can't stop for a yellow school bus with flashing lights and a stop sign that pulls out then you are the problem and should not be driving. Stop making your inability to use your eyes and the brake the problem of kids. |
| Agree, you would have caused a pile up, too busy of a highway both directions to see something pulled over across 5-6 lanes of cars turning in/out of things or driving. |
|
Dude, no one crosses river road there on foot, they’d be hit multiple times or cause a pile up.
The kid is dropped off in front of their place. Does not cross the street. Across the street is five more gas stations, each with 5-8 cars pumping or in line. |
|
Video shows a MCPS yellow school bus also not stopping for the other buses small sign out.
What does that tell you about *safety*? Or that stint of the road? Or the false sense it gives other drivers? Or just general visibility? |
If the school bus pulls into the driveway then it will have to back up out of the driveway onto the five-lane highway. |
|
This is very road specific issue.
I don’t see how anyone can really notice a bus so far away nor stop in the middle of that menagerie. That bus must generate a ton of money and really shouldn’t be stopping there, it will cause accidents across all 5-6 lanes if anyone stops. That mile stretch has too much volume, vendors, activity, and turning to see anything going on a few lanes over. Especially at after school time, which is worse traffic patterns (ie no pattern) or than at 8am. |
| It’s a roundabout, one of two horseshoe driveways may have a roof height limit. Go check. |
River Road is two lanes each way plus one center turn lane. If you personally can't handle that AND see a big yellow school bus that is stopped, then you shouldn't be driving. If drivers in general can't handle that AND see a big yellow school bus that is stopped, then the road needs to have fewer lanes immediately. |
