Whatever it takes to get these Dems to realize their soft on crime stances are ruining cities.

I love how goobers from flyover country are so obsessed with urban crime

Hey. You have to start to understand......

DC relies on tourism for a lot of its budget. Many of the small businesses rely on tourists in order to survive.

If the "goobers from flyover country" see that crime is out of control, they won't come. And, DC will suffer because of it.

+1 exactly. And what the congresswoman said is so true.

No. Apartment buildings shouldn't need more security, police should do their job.

It is pretty crazy that he apparently slept in their lobby all day, defecated on the floor(!) and no one called the cops. They must just not have any security in the building at all.

Is that what happened here?

Depends on your definition of “elderly”.

Her story was that he was in the lobby acting erratically already when she walked in. I'm sure she regrets not just walking out of the lobby instead of into the elevator.

According to the reporting he had been there all day sleeping and defecating on the floor, some earlier tenant let him in.

So glad we have a Congresswoman from rural Minnesota here to overrule the decisions of DC's democratically elected city council.

Such BS

Yes, I watch people.routinely step over /by homeless people to "be polite" instead of calling 311 or the homeless wellness check line. Do good liberals are honestly the worse at actually helping people right in front of them.

Not sure why any of this is relevant, aside from an attempt to victim blame.

Because we all need to be street smart, and because he never should have been able to get into the lobby. He either got in through an unlocked door, or someone let him in (see: lack of street smarts. don’t let a shoeless crazy guy into your lobby.)

I agree. We all need to accept that every encounter with someone in this city could result in us being the victims of violent crime, particularly encounters with Black people who don’t look like they belong. We need to start applying “street smarts” to these situations to ensure that we are all not crime victims. Enter the lobby of your building and see a Black person there: exit immediately. If a Black person tries to get on the elevator with you: wait for the next elevator. Do not make eye contact. Do not exchange pleasantries. Everyone needs to be street smart unlike this naive midwestern Congresswoman.

You’re a caricature of yourself.

If hypothetically the entire DC Council gets carjacked and held someplace, while violence interrupters work to free them (which DC Council has told us to expect to be an effective approach, so don’t worry DC Council is safe and living their best life in this hypothetical situation), would anyone realize they are missing in action?!

The only reason I know they exist is when they say idiotic things and erode the quality of life in DC.

The social norm that has been established is that calling the police on a person of color who is engaged in anti-social behavior is inviting police violence and potentially death on them.

The other reality is that only the property owner or their representative can trespass someone from a building. So if you call the police, they may only come if they have committed a crime.

right, property owner bears a lot of responsibility here.

A lot of people are like that about a lot of thinks. Suddenly they reconsider; hence they don't have empathy before.

When you make assumptions without facts, you're not as smart as you think you are.

H street.

H street is definitely one of the most dangerous parts of Capitol Hill. And Capitol Hill in general is way more dangerous than WOTP

Democratic Rep. Angie Craig vowed on Tuesday to fight for tougher penalties for repeat offenders after she was assaulted by a crazed suspect with a long rap sheet inside the elevator of her Washington, DC, apartment building last week.

Kendrid Hamlin, who is believed to be homeless, allegedly punched Craig and grabbed her by the shoulder and collarbone during the early morning attack last Thursday, authorities said. He was arrested later that night and charged with assaulting the congresswoman.

“I was assault No. 13 on his record,” Craig told CBS News on Tuesday. “And I’m gonna do everything in my power to make sure there’s not a 14, a 15, a 20.”

“If you throw somebody in jail for 10 days and think, ‘There’s your punishment, and we’re gonna let you right back on the street,’ what the hell do you think’s gonna happen?” she added.

Hours after the assault on Craig, the GOP-led House voted 250-173 to overturn a revamping of DC’s criminal code, which lowered the maximum penalties for burglary, carjacking and robbery. Craig joined 31 Democrats in voting for the measure.

This interview is absolutely devastating for Charles Allen and the DC Council. Just devastating. I hope they keep talking about “colonialism” just to show how extreme and out of touch they are. They’re embarrassing themselves and this city and they can’t even see it.

I fully expect to see the council call for a ban on elevators. People should take the stairs because it is healthier.

Given how obsessed you are with this issue, it would be nice if you took the time to get the facts. The accused is as an adult and has previously committed serious crimes, which means that he would have been prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office. The DC Council has absolutely no oversight whatsoever over the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Congress has oversight over DOJ/USAO. But the Council WRITES THE LAWS. And recently revised the code to lessen penalties for many crimes.
