You can call the number above when you see a person in need of shelter or for a wellness check. For example, when you see someone lining prone in a bus stop or ranting on a corner--all daily sights in the District. As a member of a free country with many services in place, I sure hope you have the number in your phone and call accordingly. |
They aren't so great about wellness checks - I once saw two homeless guys in an all out brawl, blood was drawn, cars dodging them as they fought on the sidewalk and in the street... I called the homeless hotline and told them what was going on, they were like "and what would you like us to do about it" - I was pretty damn frustrated after constantly hearing "don't call police on them" so I told the hotline operator "I only called to give you a heads up so that if you actually care, you'd send someone to try and intervene, because if nobody does in the next 5 minutes, my next call will be police." I ended up calling police. Fck it. |
yes. and if someone is actually having a medical emergency you call 911 not 311. I call 911 for the potential ODs. 911 for fights/assaults. 311 is for a mental health crisis or a non-emergency. When you call 911 for an OD the only trick is to not speculate on drugs or homelessness because you want the ambulance not the police. Just say “there is an unconcious person on the sidewalk.” |
DC is in a bad place right now... woman stabbed to death in hotel room (randomly)... Congresswoman attacked (randomly)... Senate staffer stabbed (randomly) and that's just the past few weeks along with the now "usual" gun play over drugs, beefs, and disrespect. |
And yet we can't get a damn thing done to get serious about mental health in this country, because *sigh* Republicans. |
Pretty dumb assessment. Perhaps March of the homeless issue is due to mental health and the crime that comes from that. Out that crime volume is 1/100 of overall crimes committed in DMV. Crimes like carjacking by teens (remember the one Indian guy who died), gang shooting all over DC and Baltimore, burglaries etc……. Most of these violent crimes are by teens or young adults who are not mentally ill. Just know the police and DA are soft on crime and won’t investigate or prosecute…. You need to understand there are just people out there who do not belong in society and need to be locked up. It has been like this for 100’s of years. |
Why are people not carrying cans of pinto beans and cans of wasp spray around? Perhaps opening indoor ranges where residents can practice throwing canned beans at targets would help. A separate area can be designated at the range for people to practice spraying wasp spray into the faces of attackers. Don’t be a victim. |
Sure, Jan. |
I am deathly allergic to pinto beans. Is there an alternative legume that I can safely use? |
