I agree. We all need to accept that every encounter with someone in this city could result in us being the victims of violent crime, particularly encounters with Black people who don’t look like they belong. We need to start applying “street smarts” to these situations to ensure that we are all not crime victims. Enter the lobby of your building and see a Black person there: exit immediately. If a Black person tries to get on the elevator with you: wait for the next elevator. Do not make eye contact. Do not exchange pleasantries. Everyone needs to be street smart unlike this naive midwestern Congresswoman.[/quote]
