Richard Montgomery in lockdown?

They didn’t discuss too many specifics of what happened on Friday other than give the timeline and that they are conducting an investigation. All we know is that RM students let in Gaithersburg students prior to lunch, and an altercation broke out. A student reported possibly seeing a gun (police are trying to confirm whether it was a gun in the picture they have), and the principal called for a lockdown.
Lots of questions came up from parents that were left unanswered. Many people brought up metal detectors, ID badges and open lunch.
We were told they are going to review the questions and will also be sending out a survey on Friday.

You mean getting rid of Open Lunch? They barely have enough space for the kids as it is.

And why are we punishing the 99% of kids who aren’t involved in a gang for the bad behavior of a few students?

They made it clear that the possible gun sighting was outside of the school building, not inside.

+1 I don't think this is related to open lunch. If anything, the RM kid who let the GHS kids in that caused the issue happened in the building right before lunch began.

Kids interact with each other from other HS outside of school hours. Open lunch wouldn't prevent any of this.

Exactly. Address keeping the door locked during school hours. Address having non-RM students in the building. Cameras by all the doors? Make sure the kids know not to let students in if they are not supposed to be there. This happened at Cabin John MS a few years ago.

Metal detectors at every door? Not realistic and not going to solve the issue of other students accessing the school who are not supposed to.

Also, let's get our political leaders to be tougher on crime and gang activity/drugs.

Parent of a middle schooler here. What are the comments said that the Gaithersburg students were let in by Richard Montgomery students. I thought kids could come and go in high school and that the doors weren’t necessarily always secure. Am I wrong and if I am then will there be any consequences for the Richard Montgomery students who let the Gaithersburg students in. I’m sorry if my question is ignorant, I’m trying to understand that comment.

I am the PP who posted the summary of the meeting. I was just listing the most commonly mentioned ideas from parents. The RM staff did not agree or disagree with any of these. There were also parents arguing against the ideas. Again this was mainly done in the chat so a lot of ideas weren’t explicitly discussed. This is why they want us to fill out the survey.

And some kids attend multiple high schools because they take classes for special programs. Are they now going to have two IDs? Do we really expect kids to inspect everyone’s ID?

Folks need to let the investigation complete. There is too many open questions and reactionary ideas floating about.

You cannot rely on kids to self-police. They know they're not supposed to let other people in but either don't care or don't feel empowered enough to force others to comply.

This needs to be addressed by staffing security at the entrances or using security systems to let only those in who should be let in, which also requires more staff.

Securing our schools will require a significant investment security personnel, but in the quantity and quality of the staff.

Agreed. We need more (well-trained) security staff.

My kid at RM would not know if they were opening the door for a non-RM student. The kids don’t show ID at the door. The trespasser probably just tapped on the door and someone opened it and went about their day.

Good point.

Parents, please fill out the survey and provide thoughts! MCPS needs to know that parents are very concerned and that school security needs to be a priority.

Because MCPS sucks at or is unwilling to identiy, isolate and punish the offenders and insists on blanket rule changes in the name of "equity."

This is why they would rather close bathrooms off when kids use drugs or fight in them rather than identifying those kids and suspending their bathroom privileges.

MCPS knows and does not care. They just want to perform acts that make it seem like they care, but they won't take any meaningful or drastic steps to do anything. Complacency and status quo is the name of the game.

Update regarding the lockdown incident -
https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/local/maryland/police-juveniles-arrested-after-group-of-gaithersburg-students-were-led-into-a-school-bathroom-and-robbed/65-c0d900a7-03e5-4578-906f-11075bafb875

"A joint investigation by RMHS staff and Montgomery County Public Schools security revealed that several students from Gaithersburg High School entered RMHS with help from RMHS students.
The Gaithersburg students were led to one of the school's restrooms during school hours where they became the victims of a robbery by several RMHS students, according to police.
Police say three juvenile boys, ages 14 and 15, were identified as suspects and charged with Robbery and Conspiracy to Commit Robbery in this case."

Because our schools are so overcrowded we couldn't socially distance during a pandemic. We had to shut down. We can't screen kids at the entrances because it would take too long. Students font recognize who even goes to their school.
The answer is always the same- we are out of control because the schools are too large.
