Does anyone have any further information from the PTSA meeting last night about the incident? I couldn't log in. They didn't send the passcode out until like half past the hour after the meeting started, and I didn't see the email in time. any further info about what happened other than what was sent out in the email from the Principal?
They didn’t discuss too many specifics of what happened on Friday other than give the timeline and that they are conducting an investigation. All we know is that RM students let in Gaithersburg students prior to lunch, and an altercation broke out. A student reported possibly seeing a gun (police are trying to confirm whether it was a gun in the picture they have), and the principal called for a lockdown. Lots of questions came up from parents that were left unanswered. Many people brought up metal detectors, ID badges and open lunch. We were told they are going to review the questions and will also be sending out a survey on Friday.
You mean getting rid of Open Lunch? They barely have enough space for the kids as it is. And why are we punishing the 99% of kids who aren’t involved in a gang for the bad behavior of a few students?
+1 I don't think this is related to open lunch. If anything, the RM kid who let the GHS kids in that caused the issue happened in the building right before lunch began. Kids interact with each other from other HS outside of school hours. Open lunch wouldn't prevent any of this.
Exactly. Address keeping the door locked during school hours. Address having non-RM students in the building. Cameras by all the doors? Make sure the kids know not to let students in if they are not supposed to be there. This happened at Cabin John MS a few years ago. Metal detectors at every door? Not realistic and not going to solve the issue of other students accessing the school who are not supposed to. Also, let's get our political leaders to be tougher on crime and gang activity/drugs.
You cannot rely on kids to self-police. They know they're not supposed to let other people in but either don't care or don't feel empowered enough to force others to comply. This needs to be addressed by staffing security at the entrances or using security systems to let only those in who should be let in, which also requires more staff. Securing our schools will require a significant investment security personnel, but in the quantity and quality of the staff.
My kid at RM would not know if they were opening the door for a non-RM student. The kids don’t show ID at the door. The trespasser probably just tapped on the door and someone opened it and went about their day.
Because our schools are so overcrowded we couldn't socially distance during a pandemic. We had to shut down. We can't screen kids at the entrances because it would take too long. Students font recognize who even goes to their school. The answer is always the same- we are out of control because the schools are too large.
