You are making claims I never made. No one said colleges prevent every bad thing from happening to your kid when you drop them off. I said there is a system and structure in place that you can turn to in the event that something does happen. No such structure is in place when you rent a beachhouse for a bunch of unsupervised teenagers. Furthermore, LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT themselves say dropping your kids off at college and at the beach for Beach Week are very different things. Please stop it with the false equivalencies. Just say you'd prefer not to upset or disappoint your kid, but don't try to justify it as being the same thing as dropping them off at college. |
Oh the drama |
People die at the beach when it’s not beach week. The roads are dangerous. |
Lol, they go to the house parties and check in students? No. |
|
Beach week is way less safe than going off to college. I remember the late 90s well. Access to drugs and everyone going wild for a full week getting effed up and plenty of dodgy non consensual stuff happening too. OP, hold your ground. |
DP. Aren't parties at colleges just as bad? Rush week? |
| If parents don't *make it happen*, it doesn't happen |
A PP provided a link of hotels that allow 18 yr olds to book rooms. They don't need parental permission if they have their own money and cars. |
Most kids are subsidized by parents in some way, shape or form. Whether it's paying for the car and car insurance, cell phone bill, etc. They MIGHT have the pocket money for the hotel, but it's not likely kids are taking a weeklong vacation with no financial support from their parents for food and activities. |
Yes. Parties in college are just as bad. And campus police (aka campus rent a cops), are not a better answer than actual police. Campus security if notorious for hiding sexual assault claims. If someone is assaulted at beach week, they should report the assault to actual police that will work with the local district attorney for legal enforcement. In college, assaults should be reported to actual police - not just campus police. Parents should teach their children about excessive drinking. They could get alcohol poisoning. They could be assaulted. Having sex with intoxicated partners can be a crime. These are all lessons to be taught before college, as well. |
Having sex with an intoxicated person is not a crime |
If they are too intoxicated to give consent, it is a crime. With today’s culture, no one wants to be in court trying to defend that the person now claiming they were raped was not so intoxicated that they couldn’t consent. |
This. My daughter went because she was mature and trustworthy. Not all of her friends were and those parents wisely didn't let them go. |
Not all of us grew up around here, so it doesn't have to be a "rite of passage". |
