Why do some parents support Beach Week?

I think you meant August…that’s when we send our kids off to college…several hours/states away.

I’m a MoCo native who went to Beach Week starting junior year. It’s a rite a passage. You either trust your kid or you don’t. You can’t helicopter forever. Sending them to beach week with kids you know staying in a house owned by someone you know is as safe as it gets once they launch.

Not all of us grew up around here, so it doesn't have to be a "rite of passage".

DP.. sure. If you don't want your kid to go, don't let them go.

I didn't grow up around here, but my kids are.

Prom is also a rite of passage in the US, and we all know about those after prom parties where drugs, alcohol and sex occur. Did you go to Prom?

I must have been a "good kid" then. I went to prom and the school-organized post-prom and that's it. Didn't touch drugs or alcohol, nor did most of my peers.

Not saying some kids didn't do it, but me and my friends were not some anomaly either.

I’m crying with laughter at how many parents are deluded about the nature of college - as “safe” with “systems” and “structure” to turn to in cases of emergency. Nothing could be further from the truth IME.

Relative to a beachhouse rental? Yes, it's safer.

Nope, it’s not. But you go ahead and believe that if it helps you sleep at night. Life is scary and teens make a lot of bad decisions but that’s all part of growing up.

So law enforcement officials from these beach towns who are pleading and begging with parents from MoCo to know how dangerous and scary Beach Week is are what? Just fibbers and liars looking to keep suburbanites from having a good time?

NP. OP, I think you see clearly the evidence of moral decay and lazy parenting in our society. This is why we as a country can't have nice things anymore.

PP here.. exactly. Just because things like that happen at prom or beach week it doesn't mean that every kid does it. I went to prom and never did that stuff. I've never gotten drunk or take drugs.

well, it's not like cops can tell parents how dangerous colleges are and so don't send your kids to college.

Law enforcement is not begging anybody to do anything.

Ocean City has made serious changes to beach week over 20 years providing housing, safe entertainment and information for parents. It’s part of their outreach to keep parents informed and students safe.

I agree, parents have been lazy and they can’t even trust their kids to go to the beach for a week. The non-lady parents have done their job and have no problem with their kids going to OC for a week.

Great and if you went to beach week you would have had no problems. Thanks for proving the pro -beach week groups point.

There was a brawl on the boardwalk that made national news for its violence and chaos: https://www.delmarvanow.com/story/news/local/maryland/2020/06/19/ocean-city-boardwalk-fights-violence-details-videos-police-reports/3213865001/

Many have been critical of senior week — June is the traditional month for graduating high school seniors from Mid-Atlantic states to vacation in the resort — as the root of recent unruliness in the town, which has been captured in various social media videos.

Delmarva Now's analysis found 20 of those 103 arrests were of people 18 or 19 years old, while the remainder were suspects age 20 or older.

From June 1-14, Miller told Delmarva Now two dozen juveniles have been arrested in the town.

The police department provided documents to Delmarva Now for 21 arrestees charged between June 11 and June 13. All of those are for adults, as records for juveniles are not available to the public.

Ocean City is trying to clean it up, but do not lie and say Senior Week/Beach Week is now "safe." It is what it has always been.
