| Both great schools, i would go with fit |
Sure, Chicago would be the choice is a student wants a PhD, but that is an absurdly small number of kids. |
More absurdly small at Wake than Chicago, that's for sure! |
True! But it is also true that students are getting shot at U of Chicago! https://news.wttw.com/2021/11/13/suspect-charged-death-university-chicago-student https://wgntv.com/news/chicago-news/university-of-chicago-student-shot-while-sitting-on-green-line-train-dies-after-days-in-hospital/ |
| this is such a dumb question. Harvard or Pitt might be a little dumber, but not much. |
| OP is trolling y'all |
| True. One is dumb enough to actually consider wake if they got into UChi |
|
Wake used to have a huge percentage of kids who started pre-med, pre-law or on an MBA track. A bunch of my friends did one of these for grad school. I do know some PhDs, as well, but definitely more lawyers and MBAs, along with some doctors (my big sister and my little sister from my sorority are both physicians)
I actually worked at the law library while I was there. Wake also has its own MBA and it’s own med school. |
Sure, the top of the Southern wealth pyramid are going to Yale and the like. But that only fuels the resentment that the 2nd-tier wealthy at schools like Wake have against non-wealthy Southern WASPs further. They think WASPs from the Northwest look down on them (which, let's be frank, is true), WASPs from the West/Midwest generally don't bother with Wake, and they hate the rest (Catholic, Jews, Blacks) for the obvious racist reasons. The only reason that anyone would suggest Wake over Chicago is the social life. Wake is 50% Greek, 1st semester freshman cannot even rush so that's 57% of the eligible population, and more students tend to join Greek Life in later years until most people you meet are involved in Greek Life. Social Life at Wake is Greek life. And Greek Life at Southern schools is cutthroat. I'm just saying make sure the students are the correct demographic before they commit to that. Otherwise the only supposed plus for Wake becomes a huge negative. NoVa kids complain about how fratty UVA is and how Greek Life is so dominant despite the school being 35% Greek, filled with NoVa public school kids, and being 3x the size. |

1. you're confused if you apply to wake and Uchicago, both
2. no one has ever chosen wake over UC, mostly bc no one has applied to both of these schools the idea that someone would take the trouble to apply to UC, but then be swayed by the prospect of the Greek scene at a school for rich kids from Winston-Salem is laughable as a premise. Such a person does not exist. |
| Both excellent schools. Just pick based on fit |
I received an athletic scholarship offer from Wake and being a poor single mother kid from Chicago who got into U of C as well, Wake was preferred over U of C for me. I held no illusions - U of C was and is one of the most rigorous schools in the country. But Wake at no cost to me? In a Power 5 athletic conference? Not a close call. I did receive an athletic scholarship to Duke and went there, a school arguably equal to U of C. U of C was a better fit (other than the national class athletic thing) because I was an outcast as a poor kid at Duke. The education was excellent and I learned how to compete academically. My rival did take the Wake offer and did well in every aspect there. He was African American so I would not rely on stereotypes. There are lots of reasons people choose schools. I thought Duke was physically beautiful - but Wake was stunning too. |
| Agreed. Both excellent schools. Your child would do well lucky to go to either. Just a question of the best fit for your child. |
Sounds like the kid cast a wide net and these are the finalists. It has been an odd year. The weather is terrible and the city is not what it use to be. Chicago is a mess. https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/2021-ends-as-chicagos-deadliest-year-in-a-quarter-century/2719307/ I could see WF being the choice. |
What are you talking about? Rich kids from WS do not go to school in town, doofus. Just like all the upper NW kids don't go to American or Georgetown. |
