Losing weight over 50 - female

Anonymous
I’m 53, menopausal on HRT, hypothyroid, and on anti-depressants that make you gain weight. I need to lose 50 lbs. I’ve been thinking about either weight watchers, intermittent fasting or keto. I know I have to throw in exercise as well. Any 50 something’s out there, who needed to lose a good amount of weight with some things working against them, have any tips, success stories, etc. TIA

Keto has worked wonders for me at age 48. I did it strictly for a few months, and am now more lax, but still majority low or no carb. Believe the hype!

Was there a specific website or book you used for guidance? I’m not sure where to start. Also, did you have any bad side effects the first few weeks?

Almost 53 year old here: I gained 15 pounds in a year and have been so frustrated and depressed. I started alternate day fasting 2 weeks ago and have finally seen movement on the scale in the right direction. Basically it’s a 4:3 schedule. On MWF, I eat when and what I want. Go to sleep and on T&Th I eat 0-500 calories. I go to bed and then eat the next day. On Sat & Sun, I eat.

+1 Male
Use Dr diet.com and some popular YouTube video.
Drink a lot of water. First weeks might be hard because of sugar withdrawal.
Good luck.

If you cannot lose weight on a regular lower calorie diet and try something like keto, yeah, you might lose some weight...some. However, thus is not a sustainable or healthy diet, and you will risk pancreatitis if you are not careful. You will also just pack it on again.

Seriously, the key is just less calories and move more. Intermittent fasting isn't reallt fasting. You just really aren't eating as much. Try it. New normal. I did that,.....have all the things you have plus I am on a beta blocker which supresses metabolism. I lost about 15 lbs in a year. It is slow. My goal is 30 lbs. So, working on 15 more. The reality is that I might achieve half, but I'm good.

My mom and older sister joined weight watchers a couple years ago (both had been on it before) and each lost 50 lbs each, and have kept it off. Mom was in late 60s, my sister in her late 40s. Both were fairly active prior, but their eating was what did them in, specifically portion control.

Pro’s: my mom is as skinny as I can ever remember. Cons is she’s very fixated on it now, she’s constantly talking about calories and steps. But she’s so much healthier it’s a good trade off.

I think we have the same mother.
Actually my mom is in her mid 70s. She’s lost close to 70 lbs in the last 18 months, and I can’t remember when she was this thin. She is obsessed and has not missed a WW meeting in forever, even when she and my dad have traveled all around the country.

I am 55 and do WW including meetings, the accountability of going to the meeting helps me. I have lost 15 pounds since April but that also includes several vacations in the summer. I have about 26 more pounds to lose. I have also started listening to the podcast Weight Loss for Busy Physicians, I am not a doctor and the podcast is great and really helps with mindset.

I am starting today - in the same position.
This is my plan.
For this week walk 1K steps a day greater than my average baseline - next week 1K more - next week 1K more final week - I have increased my baseline by 4K steps. [To get in 4K more steps I will need to make choices like to go for a walk at lunch - or walk instead of driving places. I am hopeful that this approach will both be a sustainable lifestyle change that will help decrease stress and lose weight]

I am doing a plant based diet 5 days a week. My desire with this choice is to rebalance some unhealthy eating habits that have made their way into my life.

I am mid 50’s and the only way I lose weight is to count calories and consume less than 1600 per day. I track calories on My Fitness Pal. If I do it religiously, I lose weight. No particular diet but focus on protein and vegetables. I also run, but this is more for mental health than weight loss which is all about calorie consumption.

WW works. You just have to be of the mindset that this is not a diet, but truly a lifestyle change. I’ve been very successful losing weight, just not keeping it off because I return to my old habits.

Has anyone tried the online app Noom? Clearly it is getting a lot of promotion

The only way I can lose weight (54) is to eat mostly veggies, some lean protein and one carb serving per day. No sugar, no more than 2 fruits/day and no drinking. I also make sure I'm getting a lot of steps in/workouts each day. I only see the scale move when I go to bed a little bit hungry.
