Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
I'm not the PP, but I think that Montgomery County's segregated housing is a bad thing. And it's the segregated housing that leads to segregated schools, including the concentration of poor kids and English-language learners in some schools and the absence in others. |
No sure about all above school, but students from some of these schools had a protest after the election and shouted "Build a bridge instead of a wall" on the streets in front of the town hall. I hope the victim was not one of those students. |
Please, if they did that, there would be outrage. That would never fly in the W schools. |
What you aren't understanding is age is one component when it comes to assessing risk. When you combine the below factors, the threat risk goes up considerably. Nowhere do I list race. 18 year old in 9th grade (not educated) In the country illegally and on a deport list Comes from a violent country where rapes are probably very common and ignored (this one is the most disturbing) Does not speak English School does not have a history of these persons, mental capacity, true age, address for one of them. So basically, MCPS took 2 people who have come from terrible environments and have probably seen and have become accustomed to horrific atrocities and you throw them in a regular classroom. Why did anyone think this would end well? Did they do a psych evaluation on them? |
According to the posts above, the students were in the METS program that has self-contained classrooms for Spanish speakers. If so, your contention is incorrect. |
You want MCPS to do psychiatric evaluations on all students without previous school records? Or only the ones who don't speak English? Or who don't speak English and don't have birth certificates? Or who are male over the age of [something]? Or...? It's easy to predict things after they happen. The likelihood that these two people would rape somebody in a high school bathroom is 1 -- because it actually happened. How many 18-year-olds without papers, from Central America, are there in MCPS? How many of them have raped somebody in a high school bathroom? If your goal is to prevent rapes in schools, this is an extremely inefficient and ineffective way to achieve that goal. |
Quite a few schools listed participated the protest. They don't like Trump, understandable. http://rockvillerampage.com/8014/editorials/protesting-is-not-enough-to-have-an-effect-on-policy/ Perhaps majority of the students and their families of these schools support Obama's immigration policy. Even it means you have to scarify campus safety and more. If you are one of such parents/ students, don't complain. |
DP here. Are all the METS program classes self-contained? I ask because there are many ESOL type programs in which the students are in gen ed classes for “nonacademic” classes such as PE and some electives. |
They take PE and some other classes such as art with the general population. I think the biggest issue is we are not vetting these older students before they enroll into the school. |
My daughter has many Hispanic friends, male and female. Their parents immigrated here when they were younger. I don't know the document status for any of them. They have grown up here and are accustomed to the American way. I feel she is safe with all of them. On the flip side... I would NEVER feel safe, though, with her hanging out with a man who recently immigrated here after growing up in an environment of violence, where rape is the norm. It isn't about race or immigration. I would feel equally uncomfortable if a white 19 year old was thrown in 9th grade. Why isn't he in 12th grade? Something isn't right there. I'd be cautious. |

Perhaps because he didn't have access to schooling in his country of origin and doesn't speak English. |
Because he didn't have any high school credits from Guatemala. Likely, he was not in school for several years. This is very, very common among the students coming from Central America. |
Do you really believe this rapist was a "student coming from Central America"? Oh my! |
What does that even mean? He was a enrolled as student in MOCO and he's from Central America. |
DP. It's a factual statement. He was a student -- that's why he was at the school. And he comes from Central America. |
