Friday's "snow?"

One thread about the safety of our students doesn’t negate the value of another. The snow (and honestly an inch can cause havoc if roads are slick) impacted everyone today. The gun incident impacted one high school and likely most students were unaware that it occurred until after it was over.

I grew up in the midwest. The people of MoCo are so dumb when it comes to snow.

There's no need to be frightened when it snows an inch. The roads are wet. Go about normal life!!!

If people knew how to drive in snow it would be fine. But a lot of poeple in MOCO drive like they are cocaine addicted squirrels under the best circumstances

We're terrible drivers. We aren't used to snow and think our massive SUVs make us invincible. Also approximately 75% of vehicles in the state of MD have had their turn signals disabled for some unknown reason so they just roam from lane to lane with no warning.

It was Rocky Hill and and the accident was on Clarksburg Rd. Which is treacherous and a salt truck broke down on that to add to the crazy. That road has huge potholes, crazy turns and very steep inclines and drops. I don’t know why the bus did not just take Burnt Hill Rd. It is more gentle and completely empty. I took this road to get to my job and it was easy and though snow-covered my AWD suv made it through without one swerve.

Are you unfamiliar with how school buses run? They have a route that is mapped out for them that takes them past all their stops. The drivers don’t just choose for themselves.

They need practice to get better.

We can't close schools waiting for better drivers.

I lived in the Midwest and upstate NY. These comparisons are simple minded and don’t consider the area’s ability to remove snow and treat the roads. We are also dealing with drivers that are either new or ill equipped to manage roads that are slick.

For anyone saying there were hardly any accidents this morning, spend some time listening to all the personal injury calls made this morning between 7:30-9:30.

Drivers won't get better if we shut everything down for an inch of snow.

But even 16-year-old drivers in the midwest are better than 40-year-old maryland drivers.

What mcps has needed above all since the pandemic is a leader who can rebuild good will between schools and the community. This guy seems hell bent on doing the opposite.

He has terrible communication skills. I left his latest email actually, viscerally disliking him and mcps.

I think today should have been a delay because many roads were not treated until well after high school and middle school students had to leave. Our road was snow covered until after 8. We are walkers so my kids were fine. We don’t mind walking in snow. But I heard our principal putting out an all alert over the announcement system about coverage because so many teachers were late that they didn’t know what class rooms were staffed (my kid is a 5th grade patrol so this was before most kids arrived). I saw at least one bus pulling in quite late as I was leaving for work, don’t know how it was for the others but we are a small neighborhood school so if we had delays I suspect it was worse for others. Hardly the end of the world but really stupid to cause this hassle because they screwed up earlier in the week (and I 100 percent believe that were it not for Tuesday they would have called the delay).

Read the earlier messages in this thread. Teachers were late because they through a temper tantrum, refusing to leave their homes early like any responsible professional. Sometimes your commutes will take longer.

My fair at all. 9 of our teachers were late as they commute from places like Poolesville, Jefferson, Middletown, Westminster, Hagerstown, Point of Rocks and Randallstown. They all left between 6:30-7a except the Poolesville teacher who left at 7:15. Their commutes were awful with some having to find another source for daycare as their daycare was closed or they could not get to their child’s daycare. 28 was a hot mess and it took Poolesville teacher a little over 2 hours to get to work. It is not these teacher’s fault that they have to live in affordable areas far from central Gaithersburg where they work. That is what they can afford. Stop bashing teachers for everything.

Come on. They obviously should have left earlier than that. It's their own fault they were late. What were they expecting?

Funny you bring up daycare today. Did you also complain when MCPS closed before-care on Tuesday? Or were you one of the posters blaming parents?

Not that poster, but it’s possible that they couldn’t leave earlier due to daycare.

In years past, MCPS always erred on the side of safety. This was particularly true with two hour delays, which don’t need to be made up. Yesterday, MCPS’s decision was based on worrying about whether they made the right call on Tuesday. I find this to be troubling rather than basing it on the present conditions.

The same thing happens when we have heavy rain—we see an increase in car accidents. Should we start delaying school for rain too? People here need to toughen up. There truly was no need for schools to be delayed today.
