40K killed? Utter lie. |
It says 40k casualties, not killed. |
Russian though? Or Ukrainian as well? It is not easy killing people unless they are the victims of bombs. |
It’s a tiny tweet and you couldn’t be bothered to finish reading 280 characters. It clearly says: killed - injured - taken prisoner. |
This is the Russia small “trained” army. About 10k killed and 3 times that number wounded. I would say it is more like 15k plus 45k wound/prisoners. This means many of their combat units are no longer effective. A battalion of 10k troops and 300 tank is now 2k troops and 20 tanks. |
That number has been bandied about for a week. It's based on the estimated number of Russian soldiers killed, and the usual war calculus that there are 3 to 4 times as many injured as there are dead. 10K estimated killed. Which means perhaps 40K estimated total casualties, as a conservative estimate. There is no word on the number of Ukrainian soldier casualties, as this is a closely guarded secret that NATO and Ukraine want to keep from the public, so as not to dampen morale. But obviously war has taken its toll on that side as well, and they can ill afford replacements. Hence their need for superior weaponry. |
Russian figures exclude deaths/ injuries from: - Vagner Group: these are “private contractors” made up almost exclusively of Russian ex- military, including many combat vets and special operations troops. They answer directly to Puty. About 4,600 have been killed by the Ukrainians. - Chechens and Belorussians: we know Belorussian troops are guarding Chernobyl, and probably not dying in large numbers; the Chechens have suffered heavy losses; the entire first was was likely wiped out. Doubt Puty is counting these deaths. - unknown: deserters and MIA. Russians deny there are any deserters at all, there are many photos of Russian field equipment and field positions simply abandoned. The Ukrainians are not keeping a precise tally of Russian dead; there are likely many unknown KIA. |
Because pp has more trust in moscow sources obviously - “the alternative view” as they like to put it. 30 years on they still have a “russia and former Soviet Union section”, I wonder if Italian newspapers still have “Italy and former Roman Empire section”, or Turkish state media has “Turkey and former Ottoman Empire states”, or may be bbc has a “Uk & former colonies section”, or may Germany has a section for “Germany and former reich states”. It’s indeed an alternative view. 30 years has passed, at least 2 generations have been born for whom Soviet Union is just something they read about in their school history books, and russia still can’t let go of the land losses. |
- and Donbass / Russian separatist militias: they are also under Russian army command, and reportedly used as “shock troops” (cannon fodder) by Russian commanders. They reportedly took extremely heavy losses. The Russians do not count these deaths /wounded. An estimated of 17,000 to 20,000 KIA is quite plausible, with easily another 20,000 wounded / out of action. That is 20% of the total invasion force, lost or out of action. Yet the Kremlin claims the invasion is “going to plan” ?? |
“Two Russian soldiers have been caught venting about Putin’s “bullshit” war against Ukraine in an intercepted phone call as devastating losses reportedly led one soldier to drive over his colonel with a tank.”

The majority of troops are support troops not combat. So the lost to combat troop will be a much great percentage. I wonder how the Syrian urban warfare specialist are doing? If they preform like they did in Syria they are a total loss. |
