How much does religion matter with regard to your kids’ future spouses

Anonymous
I was raised with a very dominating Christian mother and the religion brought me no joy or peace and only bad memories. As a result I tend to be triggered by evangelicals and preachy Christians. In general though a Christian with a quiet and tolerant faith would be fine, as well as anyone with quiet and tolerant beliefs. That goes for new agey, Jewish, Muslim, etc. My preference would be they go for someone who believes in science though!

Concensus, lol. You mean DCUM’s atheists, Jews and Muslims once again ganged up to trash Christianity, and there were no Christians here because we avoid this forum for exactly this reason.

Who is "we"? YOU certainly don't avoid this forum!

I’m on this forum tonight. Before that I haven’t been on in six months. For a reason—this forum is like mean girls in steroids, so why engage with it. In fact, it’s time to leave. Have a good evening!

PS. The fact that I have no clue what “consensus” thread you’re talking about should have tipped you off.

"Ganging up to trash Christianity" in fundamentalist Christian terms means "Discussing other religions and no religion as if they are acceptable choices."

Because in your world, anybody who states the obvious (the Religion forum is full of atheists, Jews and Muslims who gang up on Christians who have largely fled the field) must be fundamentalist.

look at the board title- the metro area (like most urban areas) has a plurality of atheists/agnostics/Jews/Muslims/very liberal christians. This board reflects the area pretty well as far as religion is concerned

Yet over represents those who are atheist, agnostic, or anti-theist overall.

Doesn't mean ganging up/misrepresenting is OK.

+1 I don’t think so either.

Doesn't really matter what I think; it's not up to me who they marry.

So it won't bother you if they won't go to church with you? If they don't celebrate Christmas? If they ask that you NOT send christmas gifts?

Nope. BTW, Jesus preached love, not frenetic gift buying.

My kids would never ask someone not to send gifts
What religion is against that?

But can you imagine that your child's spouse might not celebrate Christmas? Surely, that's not beyond the pale.

Honestly a lot of Christian families only celebrate the birth of Christ and not “Christmas,” no presents or brightly colored lights or carols, etc.

Everything about Christmas except the nativity story is pagan - the tree, the gifts, the lights, the food, the music, the yule, ...... I'm a Christian so we celebrate the birth of Jesus, but I understand that all of the things surrounding the holiday have pagan roots. You certainly don't need to identify as a Christian to celebrate what is now called "Christmas".

Washington Irving and Charles Dickens are the fathers of our modern Christmas traditions.

Eastern Orthodox. Very important, as Orthodox Christians are not permitted to marry someone who has not been baptized. No exceptions. So a prospective spouse being a mainstream trinitarian Christian is the bare minimum.
