The most effective thing you can do to address gun violence in DC is:

Elect Democrats across the country.

A Republican Supreme Court struck down DC gun laws

And those Republican ideologues sit on the Supreme Court because gun-related identity politics gets white poeple in rural areas to vote for Republican billionaires’ policies.

Our gun violence problem is the fault of the Republican Party and the billionaire donors that control the GOP.

Yes, do all this. But gun violence is also the fault of the predators who pull the trigger. And DC could use a (moderate) Republican Mayor for a change.

Or a liberal mayor with more common sense.

They closed Conn Ave because of the people streaming out of the zoo?

Crazy. And aggravating. The zoo has been trying to increase security and close itself off from the neighborhood, and wants increased fencing. So aggravating that people likely not from the neighborhood are creating the ammunition for those m measures to go through.

Yes, it's crazy that People Not From the Neighborhood came to the National Zoo. It's crazy and aggravating that UMC white people can't have a sealed off bubble in NWDC where no urban issues, like crime or guns, intrude. How dare they do this to you!

NP. PP’s choice of words is unfortunate and reeks of lots of “isms” but this is the freaking zoo. It’s a family event. I imagine all families at the zoo tonight regardless of their race or SES expected this to be a reasonably safe place.

exactly. zoolights is full of families & babies & children of ALL RACES. drop your stupid wokeness and realize that nobody wants to have to run out of the zoo in a panic because some dumbsh*t kids are setting off fireworks.

I'm done with kids setting off fireworks in crowded places -- they need to be charged very seriously.

You mean like setting them off in metro? Im with you, but police arent allowed to address teens. Someone will "capture" it on their stupid camera phone, say they are violating the kids rights and the officers will be investigated and put on leave. And if the kids are apprehended and charged, our council will make sure they are out in a week, probably with a voucher for firecrackers.

I saw a white SJW filming 2 black police officers outside the trader Joe's on 14th street while they were calmly explaining to an erratic homeless black man , he was banned for stealing, but had the manager's permission not to arrest him as long as he never returns to the store. I still don't understand what the officers were doing wrong that the bimbo SJW felt the need to film them.

Do some people really think that we should let criminals do whatever they please with impunity ?

That's what the Mayor actually does.

i fail to see what this has to do with bowser or the current administration. dc didn't all of a sudden become unsafe.

unfortunately, they've been shooting at the zoo since the 90s.

Yes we know that. But Bowser provides zero leadership on this. No press conferences, no condemnation and commitment to action, no words of admonishment. Are those solutions to this chronic problem? No, but a bare minimum gesture of concern and awareness would be nice.

Exactly. Larry Hogan would know what to do.

My husband rides metro in from the burbs for work downtown. He commented as we watched this story on the 11 p.m. news how things have gotten a lot worse (read: unsafe) over the last few years riding Metro. Telling young riders who jump the stalls they wouldn't get in trouble sent a terrible message.

We like the idea of even a nominal fee ($3?) for Zoolights. We would pay it if it meant an increase in safety.

P.S. I was too tired after all the company left Sat afternoon to make the ZooLights. Consider myself Lucky in The Burbs.

Please stay in the “burbs.” You’ll never make it in crime infested WDC.

NP here. Don’t you also want to be safe from random gun and group violence? You deserve to be safe too.

This after many instances of attacks by teens in the metro, the guy beaten by teens outside of the hotel, and now this. Have fun paying a million dollars+ for a home in a terrible city.

Have fun in Ashburn.

DC is the safest big city in the world, according to some data.

Yeah but in DC you have to work pretty hard to get arrested. Even harder to get convicted. And almost impossible to get any jail time, even for repeated violent crimes. Follow DCMPD twitter for a few weeks and see how many times a day they are on the “L/O for a B/M.” It’s pretty startling.

No one would dare jump a turnstile!

Another tid bit that has gone unreported on the news: A nearby 7 - 11 was overrun with "teens" last night, about this same time, and they stripped the shelves of the food. Coincidence?

DH also rides Metro daily and reports the same.

Agree about a nominal fee being helpful.

I mean if this is true at least it’s industrious, that’s a lot of food.

Op here

My thoughts exactly. I bet airport security goes up ASAP. We live 3 blocks from the zoo. This is incredibly scary that not even a family event at the zoo is safe in DC. The Mayor needs to get her act together.

Agree that action is needed, but this is Park Police turf. Not clear what actions can take in the short run to stem this chronic problem.

As some of this happened on federal property they should charge as many as possible with federal offenses. This means federal court without the drama of a DC superior court jury. Try to charge as many as possible as adults, and then send them to a prison in Nebraska or somewhere for a long, tough sentence.

Where do you think the federal court is?

No way in hell is DC safer than Tokyo or Singapore.

On the other hand, there's an uptick in juvenile crime in DC, and I'm not going to wait around to see if I feel nervous. Yesterday I was on the metro and looked up to suddenly see a teen boy appear next to me, tying on one of those monster teeth face masks. I had my phone out. There was no reason for him to have walked up to where I was (at the very end of the first train car). You bet I got up and walked to the other end of the car and exited as quickly as I could and made sure I wasn't being followed.

I was seated at the very end of the train near the exit with my eyes closed when one reached over tried to steal my bag. Opened my eyes just in time! It was so close.

Another time saw one reach over into a ladys bag from the seat behind her I stood up and screamed as loud as I could and he took his hand out and sat back down.
