Zoo Lights Shooting and Violence

Anonymous
According to a post on a local list serv, a mob looted and nearly stripped bare the 7-11 by the National Zoo. The shaken store clerks told customers that they feared for their lives.

This on Connecticut Ave., across from the zoo. What has happened to the District? What is the mayor doing about it?

They closed Conn Ave because of the people streaming out of the zoo?

Crazy. And aggravating. The zoo has been trying to increase security and close itself off from the neighborhood, and wants increased fencing. So aggravating that people likely not from the neighborhood are creating the ammunition for those m measures to go through.

Op here

My thoughts exactly. I bet airport security goes up ASAP. We live 3 blocks from the zoo. This is incredibly scary that not even a family event at the zoo is safe in DC. The Mayor needs to get her act together.

The federal court recruits better quality jurors that the “who am I to judge?” types that you see in Superior Court, and who far less anti-police.
Agree that action is needed, but this is Park Police turf. Not clear what actions can take in the short run to stem this chronic problem.

As some of this happened on federal property they should charge as many as possible with federal offenses. This means federal court without the drama of a DC superior court jury. Try to charge as many as possible as adults, and then send them to a prison in Nebraska or somewhere for a long, tough sentence.

Where do you think the federal court is?

I mean if this is true at least it’s industrious, that’s a lot of food.

It’s a near riot and it’s certainly looting. In any normal community it would engender an armed response.

I hope everyone posting here is also emailing Mayor Bowser and your Councilmembers. Venting on this board is not effective.

This after many instances of attacks by teens in the metro, the guy beaten by teens outside of the hotel, and now this. Have fun paying a million dollars+ for a home in a terrible city.

Have fun in Ashburn.

DC is the safest big city in the world, according to some data.

And quite dangerous, according to other data.

My DH and I always took Metro to Strathmore because it is so convenient. Unfortunately, a few years ago some "teens" decided to urinate and defecate in the train we were in and proceeded to smear the material onto seats on Metro. We got out of that train fast, and my DH and another man stood at the door to our car to make sure they could not get in. They pushed against it a few times, but we were able to bar ourselves from them.

He commented as we watched this story on the 11 p.m. news how things have gotten a lot worse (read: unsafe) over the last few years riding Metro. Telling young riders who jump the stalls they wouldn't get in trouble sent a terrible message.

We like the idea of even a nominal fee ($3?) for Zoolights. We would pay it if it meant an increase in safety.

PAID $30 (per vehicle—load up your family, friends, or neighbors & split the cost if you like) to go out to Brookside Gardens this weekend.
Beautiful Lights. Wonderful family event. Nothing crazy happened.

Worth every dollar.

Wow, this is sad. We just went to the Zoo for the first time this fall and were thinking about going to the zoo lights. I was hoping we could start going to dc since Baltimore has become terrible for crime, but probably not now. For those who say stay home and we won’t be missed tell that to Baltimore. They are begging for people to visit.

unfortunately, they've been shooting at the zoo since the 90s.

Yes we know that. But Bowser provides zero leadership on this. No press conferences, no condemnation and commitment to action, no words of admonishment. Are those solutions to this chronic problem? No, but a bare minimum gesture of concern and awareness would be nice.

Exactly. Larry Hogan would know what to do.

Grant parole?

Whatincentive does anyone have to actually pay for a metro card? That’s an odd way to govern a city. Broken windows theory ....

The video on Twitter was terrifying, there should be a caravan of pasdie wagon scooping up the entire crowd and putting them in jail.

“D.C. Council member Mary M. Cheh (D-Ward 3), whose district includes the zoo, said she was talking to authorities about deploying “violence interrupters” to prevent any retaliation for the shootings.”

Jaw. Meet. Floor. In order to prevent retaliation they must know the identities of some of these young kings. Maybe they could interrupt the violence by arresting and convicting them instead?
