Yup, this. Plus a bunch of Jews in Arlington, in Alexandria, in Loudoun, in PWC. Jews in NoVa are A Much more scattered than in MoCo and B. Less likely to be Orthodox. So much less visible Jewish life, despite the total numbers. |
Except Fairfax is smaller than Montgomery. And the suggestion that only Orthodox Jews count is offensive to many Jews, both in this country and elsewhere. |
| anyone have a sense of how many Jewish kids are at Key Bilingual? |
I don’t think PP is only counting Orthodox Jews, just saying those are the only ones you might notice in public. |
+1 MCPS has many more Jewish people. |
Why do you think there are no Jews in S. Arlington? |
“almost” no Jews in “much” of South Arlington. Based on experience, and looking at my synagogue directory. |
There are (at least) two in my kid's class in South Arlington, both are from interfaith families |
From the study and other data, it sounds like MoCo has a lot more elderly Jews, while MCPS has many more blacks and Hispanics. |
My kids have a total of 18 years in So. Arlington schools, and my over those 18 years have had in their class/TA a grand total of 1 Jewish kid, one kid with a Jewish mom who was only vaguely aware her mom was Jewish and isn't being raised such, and one kid with distant Jewish ancestry who is Catholic. With some overlap that's maybe 300 classmates, 1 Jewish classmate. The teachers, btw, have been lovely about it, inserting chanukah material into "winter holiday" material that's really all about Christmas, inviting us in to talk about Hanukkah, etc. |

I live inRockville and while I do t know the exact percentage, I have tons of Jewish neighbors. I would be surprised if it was less than 10% It’s probably closer to 20-30%.
There are lots of places where your kids won’t be one of just a few Jewish kids. |

If you look at the maps in the report, the jewish population of Northern VA clusters near the orange line, and mostly inside the beltway. It is N. Arlington and Fall Church City.
In Vienna, there are some jews, but not a lot. In fact, as my DD was growing it, it was difficult because at our shul, most of the kids were from N Arlington and Falls Church. So, DD never made friends from temple. (We did have just enough for a car pool). |
Rodef is in the Falls Church part of Fairfax County and many families live nearby and in McLean. |
No, but across the street...Olde Creek ES area. |
My kids went there (aged out 4 years ago), and in our experience they had few Jewish classmates. Probably 3-4 per grade, though its possible there were other Jews we didn't know. |
