DP here, but did you read the whole study? The Suburban Maryland counties included were limited to Montgomery and Prince George's County. The NoVA counties in the study includes Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince Williams, so it's not surprising the the total population of Jews from all of NoVA is higher. I am curious that if Howard County was included, what the stats would show. Moreover, if you compare county to county, Montgomery would still have a higher Jewish population than the individual NoVA counties.

Montgomery County covers as much ground as Fairfax County, Arlington, and the City of Alexandria combined. You would be loading the dice to compare MoCo to just one NoVa jurisdiction.

And the suggestion that only Orthodox Jews count is offensive to many Jews, both in this country and elsewhere.

Not just about noticing in public, but in supporting a visible Jewish presence in other ways. They are more likely to keep kosher, so NoVa has no kosher restaurants, and no kosher food stores (just the "kosher Shoppers") NoVa has no Jewish bookstores or gift shops (other than synagogue gift shops).

Note, its not only that MoCo community is more Orthodox - I believe the ratio of Conservative to Reform is higher there as well.

And again, FFX size relative to MoCo is not relevant. FFX does not have as many Jews as MoCo does - you need all the NoVa counties together to outnumber MoCo. (also not many Jews in MoCo' Ag Reserve)

“almost” no Jews in “much” of South Arlington. Based on experience, and looking at my synagogue directory.

I know Jews in South Arlington. I would guess most belong either to Etz Chaim or to shuls in Alexandria, not to Rodeph.

It's hard to say this definitively because of the way the authors of the study divided up NoVa with the regions they created. It does seem that the Jewish population is a little more scattered in NoVa and a little more concentrated in MoCo. The most impressive point (to me at least) was the growth that NoVa has seen in the last 15 years (whereas the Jewish population in MoCo remained stagnant). It'll be interesting to see how the region looks another 15 years from now.
