Fairmont Mayakoba won’t refund

Anonymous
I would still go. People who say Mexico was always too dangerous have no idea what they are talking about.

I just looked, looks like starting 1 week prior they will charge you 1 night's stay for cancelling within a week. OP is being ridiculous. Losing one night's rate is the cost of doing business. My spring break trip is fully charged a week before and I would lose the entire thing if I decided not to go,
OP give up, it's one night. Let is go, You gambled and you lost.

That's what I was thinking too- seems like they would have needed the type of travel insurance where you can trulu cancel for any reason but that tends to be pretty expensive and not what most people get.

After covid everyone should get that.

It isn’t cheap to do so- and you still need to check the policies. Some will insure you to cancel for any reason, but if the location was already a certain level of risk level prior to or at the time of booking, they may not cover you. People like to throw around “you should have gotten travel insurance” but most of them have never had to read the policy of filed a claim. People find comfort in buying it and I do too on certain occasions- but I think people need to go in with eyes open. I’d be interested in people who have done so and can share exactly what they bought to cancel for domestic unrest or to a destination already with travel advisories.

I don’t understand why you feel entitled to a refund.

Any thoughts on how to deal with this? We are not inclined to bring our two kids to Mexico at this point.

It wasn’t a good idea when you booked either. Oh well, now you know.

I agree. My family refuses to travel anywhere in Mexico for any reason bc of cartels. Our friends think we are insane and frequently travel to all the tourist hotspots all over Mexico. They rave about the gorgeous resorts etc. Not worth it to me.

You were insane. Prior to yesterday, the cartels did not mess with you if you did not mess with them. It was perfectly safe for the average tourist. However, things have changed now. Tourists might become collateral targets.

There have been travel advisories for Mexico for years. This is the advisory issued in August of last year (before yesterday):
Level: 4 - Do not travel to states of Colima; Guerrero; Michoacan; Sinaloa; Tamaulipas; Zacatecas
Level: 3 - Reconsider travel: Baja California; Chiapas; Chihuahua; Guanajuato; Jalisco; Morelos; Sonora

There are only two states where "exercise normal caution" is the advisory.

Yet the State Dept has successfully sent thousands of personnel and family to Mexican posts without much restriction besides avoiding driving on certain highways, and without danger pay etc. And the Mexico posts are always well bid. A place with actual serious danger would be something like South Sudan.

I'm usually the person who says people are too cautious on these sorts of things. There are black hawk helicopters, busses being burned. Even I have to cry uncle - and that doesn't make me a Karen.

We just cancelled our week in Punta Mita scheduled for the end of March.

Where are you going instead?

So it’s like DC and Chicago?

Not going there either. Or NYC

Not sure yet. We'll get a full refund on our hotel (the drop dead date is March 1) and will have to do a flight credit with the airline. I consider us very lucky.

Pickings are slim since we're a month out, though. We prefer direct flights, which limits us to the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. Direct flights are $8K for a family (very high) and even once there, all of the luxury accommodations are booked.

If anyone has recommendations, I would be all ears! I suspect we'll probably end up doing something in California or Florida. I'm disappointed, as we really needed this vacation (tough 6 months at work) and I love Mexico, but no way am I willing to risk my children's lives or well-being.

Sadly, it'll be years before I can convince DH to go back to Mexico. C'est la vie.

Suggest barricading yourself in your home and unplugging all electronics for added security. Can’t be too safe!

If you think that's a good comparison, you're deeply stupid and can't really be helped.

You're probably the person who would be the first to say they should have known better if something were to happen.

Yes these silly women who don’t want to put themselves in danger. If only we could be more like men and start some wars and shoot each other over drugs like the cartels!
