Why might someone need to buy 16+ gallons of whole milk from Costco?

no, because freezing extends the shelf life. That's why you can freeze vegetables, meat, etc. and it stays fresh longer than it would in your fridge or on your counter. Have you never encountered frozen food before?

I once wondered why someone had a whole pallet of just bottled water and gallons of mayonnaise, and someone just said, "restaurants, summer child, restaurants"

That was the whole OG concept, letting regular individual consumers in on bulk purchasing.

When my son was a teen, he drank half a gallon of milk per day - I used to joke about buying a cow!

That seems a bit much TBH

My freshman year roommate had the most disgusting eating habits. Just pure trash food and she washed it all down with no less than a full gallon of milk a day. :shudder:

What's wrong with drinking milk? Are you a vegan? Do you eat meat?

come on! a gallon of milk is not healthy normal in any context even body building. It's not drinking milk it's drinking a GALLON!

Crazy stupid question. I see local restaurant owners/managers in Costco all the time picking up staples like this. How is this not obvious.

A lot of clueless people out there.

The milk expires so quickly. Are there animals that would drink whole milk? A large number of children? They appeared mid-60s.

Why didn't you just ask?

+1 Costco milk usually doesn’t expire for a few weeks and my now-21 year old kid easily drinks half a gallon per day when she’s home from school.

So disgusting.

+1. Tepid water with a squeeze of lemon is all anyone needs.

+1, honestly, that’s all I ever have, and frankly, if it’s good enough for me, it’s good enough for everyone else as well. No calories, no sugar, no caffeine, no alcohol and nothing artificial. It truly IS all anyone needs. Other beverages should be heavily taxed.

I can think of so many things -
- Child Care center
- Restaurant owner
- Buying for extended family, neighbors or friends
- Cloud kitchen, home catering business or being on shef.com
- Making cheese (mozzarella or paneer) in bulk.
- Used for religious ceremonies in the Hindu temples
- For the kitchens that are run within the Hindu temples.

I am Indian. If I am hosting a large gathering - 40-50 people, I could absolutely use up 16+ gallons of milk.

- Make paneer (Indian cottage cheese) - make the paneer, cut it in cubes, fry it and freeze it. You can use it to make all sorts of vegetarian curries like butter-paneer, spinach-paneer or appetizers like cheeseballs or tandoori paneer kebabs. Make rasgullas, sandesh, kalakand, barfi, or milk cakes. The sky is the limit. Also, you can make a variety of cheesecakes from paneer that is high in protein and keeps very well.

- Make rice-pudding, custard, rabdi (cooked milk with milk solids), carrot halwa, kulfi (indian icecream) or a large number of Bengali milk based sweets.

- Set yogurt to make lassi, make kadhi (yogurt based curry), use for chaat, make Bengali sweet yogurt or make masala chaas.

Where to keep all the milk bottles? We either have access to multiple fridges/freezers in our homes or we have access to the fridge and freezers of multiple friends and relatives.

Also, it is ok to cook in bulk because very often we are carrying a dish for a get together or we send food to friends.

Exactly. Nothing wrong with some milk in your cofee or with cookies but it is absolutely revolting to lay in bed surrounded by Burger King, Chik Fil'A and candy wrappers slugging milk directly from the gallon jug. Like how mucousy are you? It's gross for a grown adult.

I don't eat any of those things and I drink my milk from a glass, but my husband and I are in our 50s and still regularly drink milk. In my teens and 20s, I drank about 4 glasses a day, but now I only drink 1-2 a day. We are each half Irish by ancestry -- I joke that while some people are lactose intolerant, I am lactose dependent. If I don't drink milk, I get awful stomach aches. I also use it to make rice pudding, bechamel sauce, etc. We also go through tons of cheese, butter and yogurt in our house. We don't go through 16 gallons a week -- more like 3-4 gallons in our house. But growing up in my house, I think my parents easily went through 10 gallons a week when all the kids were teens.

+1. Costco, started as Price Club, was designed to be a provider to small businesses- my parents were one of its first members. Haven’t you noticed all the frozen food - especially Asian - is what you get in restaurants?

It is literally called Costco Wholesale.

Yes, it is normal. Who is it different than eating a big slab of meat with each meal except with milk you aren't harming the animal?
