Why might someone need to buy 16+ gallons of whole milk from Costco?

The UMD microbiology course has a yogurt-making lab. I was one of the teaching assistants for it back in the day. Perhaps this milk is destined for the College Park undergrads making yogurt...

Milk can be frozen, so maybe they buy in bulk when they're at Costco.

Someone who makes their own cheese.

Yes. This is the opening scene of the movie Mississippi Masala. There's a meet-cute (though we didn't call it that back then) in which the female lead is buying a cart full of milk for cheesemaking, and the male lead asks her about it.

The milk expires so quickly. Are there animals that would drink whole milk? A large number of children? They appeared mid-60s.

Small stores and restaurants do this. Especially when an order doesn’t arrive.

We also had neighbors who were Indian and used milk for religious events.

None of your concern? My 2 teens go through ~6 gallons total a week.

It doesn't expire as quickly as you think.

When my son was a teen, he drank half a gallon of milk per day - I used to joke about buying a cow!
