Nurses no longer counted as a professional degree

good. Social workers don't make enough to borrow 200k for their education. Schools that burden their students with 200k in debt for a degree with poor carer prospects should be forced to close.

Why would a highly paid professional have a free or cheap degree?

Why? Because we as a community decide that we need those skills and those professions— and prioritize making it easier for people to get the education and training. I’m wondering if there’s something else behind this. Many people join the military to get money for education. This might have the twofold goal of getting more people to sign up — if the scholarship benefits are one of the few options out there.

It’s almost like these people making these decisions don’t think that they’re ever going to be vulnerable, in need of medical care, and dependent on nurses if they want to survive the night.

So then how do people who want to become social workers do so? How do clients, who need social workers, get services when there are no more social workers because nobody can afford to become one?

Most of them won’t. And even more people who need such services won’t get them. This is all about the 1% — and they seldom, if ever, need social work services.

What stands out to me though, is these discussions focus on “government” spending and priorities — when we need to realize that as tax payers, much of this is OUR money. The money we earned when the deadlines pressed and the alarm clocks went off isn’t going for things like healthcare and education. It’s going for tax breaks for people who have so much money that they’ll never live long enough to spend it. How many social workers could be trained for what Trump is spending on ICE, golf trips, and gaudy gilding?

The median salary for an NP is 130k, so there is no circumstance where it is financially responsible for someone with that salary to borrow 200k. Social workers have terrible salaries and the median person with a DSW only makes 80-90k each year. People with studying social work i grad school should not be allowed to borrow money at all.

Depends, nurse anesthetist average salary is 250k

We desperately need nurses though. Bedside nurses. They are the largest staff and budget for any hospital. The government should be finding ways to incentivize and maximize people going into nursing programs, not stifle it.

The point here is not about the 200k but the ability to take the student loan. Off course social worker degree doesn’t cost $200k and no one borrow that much for that degree, but most students doesn’t have money laying around even for just $40k degree.

First, I just finished an MSW degree. My program (top program for SW) cost $30k a year for 2 years so hardly $200k. Plus I received a 50% merit scholarship. Second, the demand for social workers is very high. Third, with a BA SW degree you can qualify for case management jobs but for mental health counseling (higher pay) you need an MSW. Fourth, there is a specialization in MSW programs which is akin to business school but instead of learning to use those skills (management, strategy, budgeting) you learn to use those skills to better society. Don’t we want more people trained to do that?

Nope. They want to limit how much they can take out in student loans. Only "professional" degrees like lawyers, doctors, and MBAs get to take out larger amounts of student debt.

Nevermind the fact that doctorates in nursing are quite common at the senior levels for really complicated work (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist - CRNA)

I know this; my wife is an APN.

And my daughter is planning to get a BSN and subsequently an advanced degree.

This won’t just affect the number of people getting those advanced degrees. It will reduce the number of people going into the field entirely, which is bad news for everyone.

That’s kind of the point.

Agree but WHY is it the point? Are they deliberately trying to make everything more expensive?

We are going to import nurses for cheap from other countries. We can pay them less and they will work more hours.

Nurses were trying to play doctor so makes some sense in that regard.

Medicine and dentistry are overwhelmingly women dominated but yes in general MAGA is against women empowerment.

This will benefit the UMC mostly, who can assist with the bill and who’s kids will face less competition (don’t think too many rich kids go into nursing, but lots of UMC kids do).

And paying for college and grad schools puts UMC back in middle class.
