How large is the pot belly? If he is otherwise more fit and has a belly, then I think it would be worth pursuing (you can help him change his diet). But if you think he is not interested in putting in the work to be and stay fit (and this is more important to you than companionship) then I would keep searching. This area is full of people in great shape even as they age (at least more so than other areas I’ve lived in). Join a gym or an outdoorsy/active-type club.

Right? This assumption that some men have (not all) that women need them increasingly outdated. But as I said above, men have always relied on this need - especially mediocre men - so they can find a partner to make their lives easier. I think the fear of losing this control is driving some of our current politics.

Women didn’t need men as much historically, they just were tied up financially to them. Middle and upper class women in Europe and US who became young widows who inherited often didn’t remarry. The risk of dying from another child birth was too high.
In czarist Russia wealthy women adopted girls from less privileged backgrounds to raise them for companionship in older age.

I attend all these events and venues with family and friends. Men’s ability for companionship is way overvalued.
