Because the pool shrinks the older women get. There are fewer men around and those who can engage a younger woman do so. The 60yo rich adonis is dating 45 and below. The nice, decent guys who want to date a woman of his age has many many women to pick from. [/quote]

You forget something important. There is also a 3rd choice that women have: just stay single and enjoy toys instead of feeling disgusted by sex with a partner she doesn’t desire. Particular women with money…

Right? This assumption that some men have (not all) that women need them increasingly outdated. But as I said above, men have always relied on this need - especially mediocre men - so they can find a partner to make their lives easier.  I think the fear of losing this control is driving some of our current politics. [/quote]

Women didn’t need men as much historically, they just were tied up financially to them. Middle  and upper class women in Europe and US who became young widows who inherited often didn’t remarry. The risk of dying from another child birth was too high.
In czarist Russia wealthy women adopted girls from less privileged backgrounds to raise them for companionship in older age. [/quote]
