I love the constant speculation that only and always tried to find a way to absolve this person of responsibility. Why not just wait for and rely on the facts?

Why are you so invested in a narrative that says this woman is an unrepentant monster? What do you gain from closing your mind off to the (pretty reasonable) possibility that she was not in her right mind?

Same. But my kid is 9. Jeez. Elderly? Disabled maybe but barely even senior.

I am elderly now and I don't know how I got on this message board. Where's the damn clicker to change the channel to the Matlock board?

I mean, I'm 50 but I do roll my eyes at what these kids today wear and also how no one wants to settle down and get married.

The accused is being charged with felony murder, kidnapping, and carjacking.

DC has not released mugshots since the 80s or 90s. No idea if she has socials.

RIP Ms. Gaines. The wheelchair may be due to some kind of orthopedic surgery?

I cannot fathom what her family is going through, esp. the adult daughter who was with her at the time.

More details will be available after she has an initial hearing.

Yes, speculating about whether she was the patient or not and why she would do this. But she was at the hospital with her family. She wasn't just out casing the neighborhood for a car to steal.

I’m sure that the dude that stole ambulance from there was also not there looking to steal an ambulance. But he did anyway. The thing about criminals is that they don’t stop being criminals just because they’re at the hospital.

No one is disputing who’s responsible. Just pointing out that’s it’s an odd situation and motive is not clear. We also have no idea if she was a criminal (had a record) before she did this. She is one now but no news report has identified her as having a criminal record. People are just pointing out that this does not look like the “teens looking for a joy ride” or “youth stealing cars for the car-theft ring” scenarios that that tend to dominate lately around here.

100%---someone is dead and someone is responsible

Well even if she wasn’t in her right mind she’s still a monster.

The news just said the lady may have been dead before the car was taken.

.

NP. I don't care. She killed someone, and Kayla Kenisha Brown needs to be taken out of society forever, be it in a classic prison or -- if "not in her right mind" -- then she needs to be locked up forever in one of the few remaining high security psychiatric facilities. ala John Hinckley.

Can't wait to see the toxicology report

John Hinkley wasn't locked up forever. He's been out for years, recording songs on YouTube and painting pictures of his cat.

A very different version is emerging than what we initially thought.

As speculated, the perp was indeed a patient "acting crazy" and suspected of having taken some unknown drug.

So, like a drunk driver, she had no control over her actions.

Says who? Drunk drivers get convicted all the time. It appears she's not a run of the mill DC carjacker, though. This is more like those incidents of mentally ill guys knifing someone on the street. Random and unexplainable.
