Apple Air Tags being given away to track your stolen car

Anonymous wrote:Sort of funny, but a friend did this. She tracked her car. Her husband and a guy friend went in the early hours of the morning and drove it home with her other set of keys. They knew cops weren't going to do anything about the stolen car, so they just got it back themselves. She had a new set of keys made.

We did something similar, though it was over three years ago. Two cars stolen from the same block on the same night, both had the locator app, found the cars, called MPD who met the owners at the cars, MPD did fingerprinted the cars, and owners drove the cars home. We know when the cars were stolen and we had them back in six hours.

Some friends in Virginia a few years ago found a guy with his legs sticking out of their vehicle as he attempted to hit wire the car. They snuck up and whacked his legs a few times with a baseball bat. Betcha’ he thought twice before he tried to steal another car. The Arlington cops thanked the friends for teaching the criminal a lesson.

I think we might be getting at the root of the crime issue: criminals gonna crime if they know the cops won't do their job.

I don’t blame them. People like you have just spent the last three years protesting cops and yelling about defunding them. Now that criminals have realized the cops are no longer interested in policing (because of you, if that’s not already clear) and they’re running rampant, NOW suddenly you want cops to be cops again? Yeah, no. File an insurance claim. 90% of DC residents voted for the political infrastructure that created this mess. Now you can suffer. You made your beds. Now sleep in them.

When did MPD get defunded?

You're an anarchist.

I’m really glad you asked that!

I’m sorry a simple google search is beyond your ability, but I can do it for you:

As for being an anarchist…I’m the furthest thing from an anarchist. I’m a fascist. A real, actual fascist. Not one of those imaginary MAGA’s you like to call fascist, but a REAL fascist in the Heinleinian tradition.

And I’m also someone who likes to see people get what they ask for. And DC voters have asked for the crime wave they now have. I want them to soak in it.

Interesting, I enjoyed Heinlein as a kid, but it's been a while since I've read him. Starship Troopers? Stranger in a Strange Land? To associate with a Heinlein isn't quite as scary as you are trying to make yourself sound, though I'm sure people are fainting over their morning coffees Can you say more about your Heinleinian fascism? FWIW, I'm a DC native and we are working on ranked voting. It is very difficult to not vote in the 'types' we have on the Council with our current voting process. I and many others have tried valiantly, but it's as if we don;t have a vote. We have had some real stinkers in leadership for sure, though Tony Wiliams was a bright light. Loved him then, love him now. Best thing that every happened to our city, and we need Tony 2.0.

Sorry, I shouldn't have said "trying". It IS quite startling when someone declares themselves a REAL fascist. But I think you know that and are being a little cheeky! ^

That's not what was implemented.

Here's how it worked:
FY2020: MPD final budget was $559M, of which $41M was overtime monies not previously approved by the Council. So the Council had only approved an operating budget of $518M.

2020 actions for FY2021:
Bowser asks Council for $578M operating budget for MPD for FY2021
Judiciary committee cuts Bowser's proposal by $10M to $568M (the usual back and forth between Mayor and Council)
When Council goes to a final vote, it removes a $23M school security contract from MPD and gives it to 3rd party security vendors. Council approves operating budget of $545M for MPD. Is this "defunding"? Not really because MPD is literally doing less work.

In FY2021, the MPD blows past their approved budget by over $50M due to overtime. So the final FY2021 actually-spent budget is somewhere around $600M for MPD.

Sorry, but I don't see the "defunding" of MPD.

Of course you “don’t see it”. You don’t want to accept responsibility for it.

Our D tries the same BS with scuffing the bumper of the car because she hasn’t learned to navigate a parking garage yet.

Sorry, but I don't think government workers - what cops actually are - should be dictating anything to elected officials or the public. They can quit their jobs if they hate their enormous overtime budget.

I'd love to know what the cops actually need to start doing their jobs again. Therapy? Ice cream social every Thursday? In-station 15-minute massages? When do they knock if off with their "hurt feelings" schtick?

This didn’t happen.

Armored vehicles are available in the US, but are extraordinarily expensive, handle differently than unarmored vehicles, and have a shorter than normal service life. Hence, they remain the province of the rich and politically powerful. The “shotgun in the door” idea is the stuff of poorly researched novels; while it is not unheard of for an armored vehicle to have gunports, mounting a shotgun inside a vehicle door would be next to impossible because of the length of the receiver, and at the likely range any such contraption might be used the shotgun pattern would not expand to any meaningful degree anyway. The purpose of vehicle armor is to give the driver time to get away from the place of attack, even under fire.

The aftermarket for a center console lockbox is very strong. My friend just got one installed in his new Tacoma for transporting his handgun. Looks really nice, very secure. Basically impossible for someone to break into quickly.

In states where castle doctrine extends to your car, that's a great idea. In DC, you'd probably be arrested for brandishing and scaring the poor carjacker

Should be fine if you have a CCW license.

AirTags are fine, but I’d gladly buy so high octane gas for MPD so that they can pursue suspects for a change!
