Not sure yet where these will be handed out. Part of me thinks that these will be like COVID shots and they will initially all be scooped up by people living in Ward 3, but I can't say that I really blame them. Their vehicles are being stolen as well. But I can see a scenario where in the name of equity, DC says that you don't get an air tag unless you live elsewhere.

Also, the air tags will not prevent carjackings, just the recovery of your crashed up, rolling drug den of a vehicle.

There was an article in the Post about a Capitol Hill woman who was carjacked. When the police showed up at her home, they watched as she used her Airbag to track the moving vehicle across DC. MPD said that, even though the vehicle could be located in real time, the police were not allowed to pursue the vehicle with the carjackers inside.

So the DC government can engage in its latest performative gesture by giving away Airtags or the equivalent. But this will be ineffective while the woke left on the DC Council continues to prioritize the rights of criminals above those of crime victims and the general public. It's past time to empower the police.

What is the rationale for this? Insane!

Because there's a no-chase law in DC unless the suspect was part of a violent crime, like murder, or they are suspected of being on their way to commit a crime/harm the public.

Most large cities have this same law. The area is too densely populated to safely pursue a vehicle.

Even when criminals in a car used high capacity weapons to shoot at an elementary school in NW several years (not in session because it was under renovation at the time) and injured at least one construction worker, MPD wouldn't give chase. Fortunately, the Secret Service and the US Park Police had no such restriction.

In some countries, you can buy cars with bullet proof glass and shotguns mounted in the side doors.

It's for the poorest parts of the city and where the most car jackings are occurring. Are you telling me that you can't afford an airtag? I've had one in my car for a year.

The poorest part of the city which apparently has more than enough iPhone users to make the trackers effective. That’s peak DC government for you.

Right?

Well, at there’s SOME benefit to all those tax payer funded phones.

Please stop spreading the myth that all if the covid vaccines were “ scooped up” by Ward 3 residents. That happened for about 24 hours. Then Bowser, in her infinite reverse-racist wisdom, literally stooped making vaccines available to anyone in Ward 3, including those of us on a priority list, while stockpiles sat untouched in the remaining wards. That’s the moment I decided she was an idiot as I drove to Hagerstown to get vaccinated.

Silverman staffers tried to doxx people who did exactly as you did.

Why? What's the issue?

Good idea. They don't even finger-print when the car is recovered though, so there is ZERO indication of appetite to arrest/prosecute.

-- personal experience with this

That wasn't our experience when our car was stolen. It was left in the parking lot of a rec center in Mount Pleasant (undamaged, thank god). The police came and took prints from the steering wheel, console etc. We were about to locate the car through an app we signed up for when we bought the car.

Wow, you're the unicorn. I'm happy for you. No-one else has a story like this.

Seriously.

Prints??? I don’t believe it. I think this is trolling or a lie. DC cops don’t even have a functioning crime lab right now, and haven’t for some time. Why would a CSU take prints? Plus, no one was injured - this is a property crime. They’re not going to do prints for that anyway. Not for just anyone’s car.

I call BS.

They used to, so maybe PP is talking about 10 years ago.

Apparently the issues were : (1) I’m White (2) I’m a homeowner in Ward 3; (3) I pay taxes (4) i had the audacity to assume I would have an equal access to a vaccine ( and I was on a priority list); (4) oh yea, and did I say I was white- that was the biggest issue as I see it. Whatever - Maryland was happy to have me even with my DC driver’s license. They understood what a joke DC government is at getting anything done and they were more than happy to vaccinate me.

They will run over innocent pedestrians or hit other vehicles. Call the police or go find it with them once it had stopped. Nobody else needs to be killed because you want your vehicle back. Usually the suspects are bad drivers as they get to drive only when they steal a car and every car is different.
I remember using a steering wheel lock. Nobody bothered with such vehicle.

Ahhh... The choir of apologists appear. You are correct. If we just used steerwwheel locks. By golly we would have this crime wave licked.

What??? No one is apologizing for these morons but I absolutely do not want to be killed crossing the street on the way to work so you can get your Audi back. GEt real. That's what insurance is for.

You don't get it. Yes, the carjacker has committed a crime, but other bystanders haven't and don't deserve to die in order to catch that guy who stole a car.

I think we might be getting at the root of the crime issue: criminals gonna crime if they know the cops won't do their job.

I don’t blame them. People like you have just spent the last three years protesting cops and yelling about defunding them. Now that criminals have realized the cops are no longer interested in policing (because of you, if that’s not already clear) and they’re running rampant, NOW suddenly you want cops to be cops again? Yeah, no. File an insurance claim. 90% of DC residents voted for the political infrastructure that created this mess. Now you can suffer. You made your beds. Now sleep in them.

When did MPD get defunded?

You're an anarchist. If government workers won't do their job, they should lose their paycheck.

Cops should be cops, which means busting criminals and respecting the Constitution.

You wouldn't like what busting criminals actually looks like.

Logically, no criminals should be pursued because there exists a chance the criminal will elect to flee and endanger the public.

Something similar happened to friends of ours. So how would these airtags address this? You'd have to watch it zip around committing crimes, and you'd only be able to recover it when abandoned--but you'd do it yourself vigilante style with no help from MPD? This is exactly what isn't supposed to happen, good grief.

This is my question. After your car gets stolen, do police expect you to use the AirTag to retrieve it yourself?
