This. Speed kills! Of course so does alcohol. But speeding is just as bad.

This is absurd. You really think speeding is "just as bad" as impairement?

I, a 42 year old woman with 20/20 vision, who does not use my phone with driving and never drives impaired, is "just as bad" as a person who drives drunk or texting, if I'm going 10-15 over the limit but fully present? Absolutely not. Ridiculous.

Yes. Sorry to burst your bubble. On a neighborhood road, with the speed limit being 25/30 and you’re trying to justify going 40/45?! Nope. That’s how people die. People who do NOT speed are much less likely to get in any accident. And every accident is made worse with speed. Teach your kids too. Clearly alcohol was a player here too, but if this kid hasn’t been speeding he wouldn’t have hit the other child. Also, see the horrific Oakton accident in June. No alcohol, only speed.

Excessive speed is also bad but you’re way off base here.

No, poster is exactly right. As a former prosecutor who has processed far too many crashes it makes me very angry when habitual RECKLESS drivers pooh pooh their speeding as no big deal. Driving over the speed limit in any conditions puts other drivers on the road at risk, and you’re making the decision to do it while stone cold sober so frankly I think you’re worse than someone who probably started the night planning to get home safely but after the effects of alcohol inebriation on the frontal cortex has made a terrible decision to drive.

NHTSA has done studies which establish that driving distracted by digital device use is more dangerous to the other drivers on the road than driving under the influence.

All the type A aggressive speeders (and likely tailgaters) who won’t put down their phone while barreling down the road are SHAMEFUL, just as drivers under the influence. Shame on all of you!

Back off, buddy. I’m not excusing speeders and clearly there are more of them but guess what—driving under the influence makes you….more apt to speed (along with a host of other deviations from safe driving practices.)

Dude, you clearly ARE excusing speeders. I guess that's because you are one. You need to read the prosecutor's post again and again. Maybe get your kid to read it to you and help you with your reading comprehension. Because YOU are a problem driver if you are a habitual speeder. Shame on you.

DP

I am NOT excusing speeders and genuinely almost never go over the limit except by accident by a couple miles. I am responding to the idea that speeding is worse than driving drunk. I think driving drunk is worse, perhaps because I had a loved one killed by a drunk driver (who was speeding AND in the wrong lane because they were blind drunk.)

Wasn't the Oakton kid going more than 10mph over the speed limit?

It's proportional.
25 - 25-30
30 - 30-35
40 - 40-50
50 - 50-60
55 - 55-70
65 - 65-80

Oakton kid was going 81 in a 35!!!

Right. 10 over isn’t that crazy.

You may want to rethink your math. 10 over in a 25 is 40% over the limit. 10 over in a 35 is almost 30% over the limit. If you don't think that going 40% or 30% over the speed limit is a problem, well, ... I just don't know how to respond to that.

IMO we need to entirely reconsider how we license people to drive, and how we allow people to stay licensed.

I wasn’t referring to 25 mph zone. I posted the #s above and I think 5 over in 25-30 is reasonable. Once you get to 40, then 10 over is fine.

5 over on a 25 mph neighborhood street is not reasonable.

Be honest about which scenario would upset you more: a sober bus driver driving your child at 30mph in a 25 zone or a bus driver driving your child at 24 mph with a BAC of .12%? Most people would pick the speeder.

Sorry, I meant most people would pick the speeder to drive their child. They’d be more upset about an inebriated driver.

On many 25 mph streets it is. If there are a bunch of pedestrians, crowded street with many parked cars, lots of turns, etc then maybe not. But it’s very reasonable for many 25 mph streets.

+1

Yes, driving 5 over the speed limit is nothing like driving drunk.

Seems like the other PP is trying to minimize drunk driving.

Even if speed and alcohol had not been factors, this is an unimaginable tragedy for those directly affected. I can barely breathe just thinking about it. My heart goes out to the family, friends, teachers, coaches.
Anonymous
Any one of those factors can cause a fatal accident: speed, alcohol, inexperience, distraction.... both drivers were from Washington-Liberty High School ... the community is devastated, including the charged teen's parents and family. Many lives entirely destroyed in a moment. Lashing out doesn't change it. Using the event to teach, guide, oversee, encourage, all of it, is what's called for now. As is kindness and love in all directions.

False. The Drunk Driver was from McLean HS. The boy killed was from W-L.

Do we know ,ore about the drunk driver? Someone said there were passengers. Is that true?

Two passengers in the drink driver’s SUV, all three kids got out fine. SUV of drunk driver caught fire, boy who was hit was believed to have died instantly due to the impact.

Curious as to what sorts of conversations are going on in McLean HS homes this weekend. And how many people are going to excuse the driver because he’s “from such a good home” and “it would be a shame to ruin his future.”

It would be a shame and also necessary. I hope he spends the next few years in jail. I bet he will never drink and drive again. Im glad they are keeping him in jail.
