It would be a shame and also necessary. I hope he spends the next few years in jail. I bet he will never drink and drive again. Im glad they are keeping him in jail.

Next few years???? He KILLED another person. If he doesn’t get at least 20 I’ll be horrified.

This. Speed kills! Of course so does alcohol. But speeding is just as bad.

This is absurd. You really think speeding is "just as bad" as impairement?

I, a 42 year old woman with 20/20 vision, who does not use my phone with driving and never drives impaired, is "just as bad" as a person who drives drunk or texting, if I'm going 10-15 over the limit but fully present? Absolutely not. Ridiculous.

Yes. Sorry to burst your bubble. On a neighborhood road, with the speed limit being 25/30 and you’re trying to justify going 40/45?! Nope. That’s how people die. People who do NOT speed are much less likely to get in any accident. And every accident is made worse with speed. Teach your kids too. Clearly alcohol was a player here too, but if this kid hasn’t been speeding he wouldn’t have hit the other child. Also, see the horrific Oakton accident in June. No alcohol, only speed.

Wasn't the Oakton kid going more than 10mph over the speed limit?

It's proportional.
25 - 25-30
30 - 30-35
40 - 40-50
50 - 50-60
55 - 55-70
65 - 65-80

Oakton kid was going 81 in a 35!!!

Right. 10 over isn’t that crazy.

You may want to rethink your math. 10 over in a 25 is 40% over the limit. 10 over in a 35 is almost 30% over the limit. If you don't think that going 40% or 30% over the speed limit is a problem, well, ... I just don't know how to respond to that.

IMO we need to entirely reconsider how we license people to drive, and how we allow people to stay licensed.

I wasn’t referring to 25 mph zone. I posted the #s above and I think 5 over in 25-30 is reasonable. Once you get to 40, then 10 over is fine.

Jeez. With parents like you modeling driving for your kids, no wonder the roads are lawless these days.

Up to 10 years in VA for involuntary manslaughter and have some empathy for him and his family.

Don’t get your panties in a bunch. 5 over in 25 or 30 is totally fine. And slower than people drove 30 years ago.

NP. I don’t have much empathy. He should have known better. However, he will have to live the rest of his life knowing he killed someone and regardless of the legal outcome that is a cross to bear I don’t wish upon anyone.

Did they explain how he died “instantly”? Was he wearing a seatbelt?

If we are talking safety that’s a big one.

So so awful. All of it. They held a vigil tonight at Washington liberty. So unimaginable.

He won’t get 20. He’s a minor. Maybe he will get 5. 5 years on prison is sufficient to ruin him forever. This happened to a friends brother. He killed a man while drink driving. Spent 6 years in jail. Though he wasn’t a minor. The family didn’t even want him to go to jail. Wouldn’t bring their dad back.

He won’t get 20 bc VA statute is 1-10 years for DUI involuntary manslaughter.

Agreed.

Also unbelievable is that first offense DUI (with no other charges) is 5 days to 12 months in jail.

There is an article on the Channel 5 news page that includes pictures of both vehicles. I don’t want to link to it because the images are pretty upsetting. But based on those pictures, a seatbelt was not the determining factor. Alcohol, speed and utter recklessness were.
