My heart goes out to the family of the victim, and also for the assailant and that family. So many lives forever changed at such a young age. Just incredibly sad.

This is about all of us as a community. Wake up.

As the OP I’ve lost several very close friends in car accidents, including my next door neighbor during our senior of high school. A car full of high school
Girlfriends, drunk on the highway, that flipped their car because the driver didn’t see a paving vehicle parked on the side of the highway. A college boyfriend, my best friend lost her right hand when her drunk boyfriend lost control of his vehicle and his car flew into an oak tree going 65 mph down a hill.

I also posted this article as a wake up call to our community because I’ve witnessed far too many families in our area offering and/or being permissive w/alcohol and turning a blind eye to drugs with teenagers. No idea how the assailant became drunk, but I know first hand what has been happening inside many homes of late. If not this accident, then others are inevitable unless changes start happening.

The carnage I saw in my youth and the lasting trauma from those events was and is real. Knowing that I have been driving through this intersection all day where this boy died brought back every childhood friend that I watched be buried or permanently maimed. I was very clear that the families involved have both my sympathy and empathy.

Uncanny that you have had so many drunk drivers kill people in your immediate sphere. I'm sure it has effected you and your views on alcohol
Have you been to grief counseling? It's never too late.

This is why I hate my kids driving sober on Fri/Sat nights after 10pm. I always fear this.

Easy. They’re doing exactly what they watched their parents doing their whole lives.

Please stop drinking and driving yourselves. Behave like you want your kid to behave.

and stop taking your children to wineries/breweries while you get your drink on. Stop normalizing alcoholism, not to mention getting behind the wheel on country roads after drinking all day.

Does anyone know which HS the drunk driver was from?

NP. In my freshman year of high school, there was a drunk driving crash, on homecoming night, the homecoming kind and queen and some friends died. It sobered the community for a few years. Some of the older teachers said it was cyclical, every 4:or 5 years, there would be a drunk driving crash and students would be more careful until they all graduated and then it would happen again.

This is so sad. I feel terrible for the boy who lost his life.

Families need to work on changing the mentality around drinking. It’s pretty stupid to get drunk.

McLean

How do you know? Based on where it happened I was thinking it had to be YHS, DJO or possibly McLean. Such a tragedy.

My heart and sympathy goes out to both families - lives changed forever.

DP here. Yes, McLean. It’s all the discussion amongst the Senior class right now. Terrible on all accounts.

Yeah, it goes to both families, but one child has no more chance, and the other still lives.

+1. This forever changes everything and will haunt both families for the rest of their lives. Male teens don’t have fully formed prefrontal lobes. They take risks and do dumb things. They think they are invincible at that age.

I live in Arlington with teens in high school and this really has shook me. I can’t stop thinking about what both families are going through right now. It is so absolutely heart-breaking. I drove my son to and from a friends’ house last night and saw flowers at the intersection.

And, there is zero indication any parents served these kids so I wish that one poster would go away. It is really callous at a time like this.

Prayers to all involved.

+2 Well said, PP. My thoughts and prayers are with both families. This is a tragedy for all of them.
