Or you could sell

And go where in the DMV? Too expensive with real estate transaction costs.

It depends how you define it. Not much $$$ left after expenses which include college tuition. NW is still high.

We do it ourselves, which means it might be a while between cleaning if friends aren’t coming over. No, I’m not embarrassed.

+1 Good for you. Boys need to learn how to take care of their living spaces.

Ewww I would like to hear that. So many of us on here talk about cleaning for the cleaners. Are there people who just don’t care?

Yes. I used to work as a housecleaner. That was years ago, but I remember in one home I was regularly taking out plates with some dried out leftovers from under the bed. Master bedroom, not the kid's room. Floss in the sink is nothing.

And too precious to clean themselves.

But not too proud to ask for money.

Lots of people are house poor and despite the big home and SUV, have no money for a cleaner.

For those who can afford cleaners, many stopped service during COVID and won't clean themselves. When cleaners came back, the quote for cleaning it all up was more than owner imagined.

You absolutely can do both. I have boys and mine are super clean: dirty clothes go in the hamper, air out the room daily, hang wet towels, do your laundry twice/week. NO clutter. This takes 10 minutes/max per day, there's no excuse for dirtiness. None. Unless you have a severe disability, there's zero excuse for urinating on or around the toilet. Our cleaning ladies are paid well and legally employed. We outsource as much as we can, it gives other people an opportunity to make a living.

Affluent person with a super messy house here.

The hassle of getting my house cleaned just outweighs the benefit of having a clean house for me. Cleaners may vacuum and mop and all that, but it's not their job to pick up clothes, dishes, empty cans/bottles, or know where to put back general clutter, so it's its own work getting the house ready for them to clean. My wife and I both work from home, so we have to be constantly moving while they go from room to room. Vacuum noise disrupts work meetings. We also have an aggressive dog so we have to figure out something to do with him while they're here.

It's just too much damn work for something that supposedly saves you work.

We’re having a post-Covid deep cleaning done today and it took us *hours* to prep for it. But we’re glad of the forcing function, since it was desperately needed and we’ve both needed to work nights/weekends for a while. Just work and kids was all we’ve been able to manage. Finding the time just to prep for this was a challenge.

Most people see your “too much damn work” as the basic chores of daily life.
