When are Herndon Middle and Herndon High going to get a break?!??

to spread out the FARMs. HHS at 50% and Langley at 1.6%. Does that seem fair to you?

PP Herndon poster: No it's not fair. I get it, too, but look at the maps. The impoverished areas in Herndon are near the Dulles Rd around Worldgate along with pockets around Herndon town center. It makes more sense to mix that border up with Carson but Pat Hynes already said that there are no upcoming boundary changes for her constituents. I don't think it makes sense to take those kids from Worldgate and ship them to Langley, do you? Besides, are you going to champion that cause?

^^ You know if you took up that cause you would be instantly branded a racist by Langley parents and "Hate has no home here" Herndon folks alike. So, that's not going anywhere.

Herndon has become a hub of sorts for the impoverished and new arrivals. When schools have 40% or more students in poverty they are eligible for more county and federal $. It makes sense to keep those students together and throw more $ and resources than break them up. That's why I don't see the situation changing at Herndon at all unless more wealth arrives with the metro.

I was asking what issues would Elaine Tholen be paying attention to?

I have seen no advocacy from Herndon, but McLean and Langley parents in Dranesville are crystal clear on what the main issues are in that part of the district.

It seems like the issues emerging in the Herndon pyramid are typical of higher FARMS pyramids and include (1) a heightened sense that the schools pay little attention to kids who aren't either gifted/AAP or ESOL/FARMS; (2) lower levels of parental involvement, which means that some parents have to shoulder a heavy burden if they want their schools to be able to offer even a fraction of the extra-curricular opportunities of a Langley or McLean; and (3) in some instances, safety and security concerns.

When you look at Dranesville, Langley precincts have tended to vote mostly for the Republican-endorsed candidate in School Board elections, whereas the Herndon and McLean precincts have tended to vote for the Democratic-endorsed candidate (and the Herndon precincts by larger margins than the McLean precincts). Tholen has been endorsed by the Democrats, and there are a lot of Herndon people who are active in the Fairfax County Democratic Committee and the Dranesville District Democratic Committee who'll be bending her ear. Karloutsos is a relative newcomer to the county and lives in the Langley part of McLean. Mobasheri is one of the Great Falls parents who appears to have become involved entirely to protect Langley's boundaries. Of the three, Tholen seems far and away the most likely to listen to Herndon parents, even if she has also taken the position that there's no need to pull anyone out of the Langley district any time soon.

Another plus for Tholen is that it's likely the Democrats will retain control of the School Board. The worst-case scenario for the Democrats is that their 10-2 margin on the School Board shrinks to 8-4; it's entirely possible they could win all 12 seats (Wilson has been a very lackluster Board member in Sully and almost surely will lose; Schultz is facing a tough challenge in Springfield from Cohen; and Moon's decision to take his name off the ballot this week increases the odds that the Democrats will retain the three at-large seats). It will be easier for Tholen to get resources for Herndon schools if she's from the same party as most of her colleagues - that's just a fact.

The One Great Falls crowd has also gone swinging at Elaine Tholen, even though she lives in Great Falls in the Langley district.

Because One Great Falls (aka "Voices of Fairfax") cares only about Langley, by definition any candidate that One Great Falls attacks will be better for Herndon and McLean.

????Carson is a middle school. Where do you intend to send those kids to high school?
And, FYI, Sully has almost as many kids at Carson as Hunter Mill. So, people need to ask Wilson (incumbent) and Peskarsky (Dem endorsed) how they feel about sending them to Herndon.
Educate the kids where they are. Shifting them will do no good.

Oh, please. She was in favor of shifting kids for OneFairfax until parents found out.

What exactly are Herndon parents bending her ear about? I mean, we have resources. My kids aren't at the high school level so again, what does Herndon need?

Irony: Herndon has voted overwhelmingly for Dems, especially in the Town of Herndon. Their delegate (who protested Trump at Jamestown) has stated that he wants to be more welcoming to immigrants, including the undocumented.
I certainly think that we should educate all the kids who are here--no matter how they came to be here. However, that is the greatest source of poverty in Herndon. We all know that. And, yet, the Democrats are the ones who vote for money to be used for legal aid for the undocumented to help stay here. Herndon has pretty much always been a sanctuary city and now all of Fairfax County is. And, yet, Herndon wants to kick these kids out of their school. Herndon is the way it is because they voted to be that way. Please explain why you should ship poor Herndon kids out of Herndon to school and bring in Great Falls kids.

On other words, voters need to speak up.

Langley and McLean parents both want the boundary between them to be adjusted to send some areas currently drawn for McLean to Langley.

The school board now realizes that we are VERY serious about this. It doesn't look like they want to risk alienating a large swath of Dranesville with continued inaction.

Several of them are now on record saying that it urgrently needs to be done.

Herndon parents are unlikely to get GF in Herndon any time soon but there must be other things.

Not true at all.

By the way, why did “One Great Falls” change its name to “Voices of Fairfax” when it’s obvious all you really want is for people to sign your petition to preserve the Langley boundaries and for candidates to sign a “pledge” that Langley families will have the final say over the school’s boundaries?

“Hoarders of Privilege” would be more accurate than “Voices of Fairfax.”

Has anyone been bending her ear about safety?

What is Janie Strauss"s affiliation and what have Herndon parents been asking her for all these years?
Anonymous
Herndon might as well be in another state for all the attention Karloutsos or Mobasheri would pay to it.
Anonymous
Isn't Strauss a Democrat?

I'm seriously asking what she has advocated for on Herndon's behalf.

Maybe for the renovation?

I doubt that she asked the school board to ship FARMs kids away, especially if non of you never asked.
