Ideal Protein Diet

Anonymous
I just attended the new patient orientation and expect to start tomorrow after doing my grocery shopping today. I've lost a lot of weight on my own, but I hit a plateau that is going on a year, and I just needed a change of pace and a more strict protocol to keep me on track and to lose the last 40 pounds.

Any tips or advice? Any support? I've already paid for the program and am committed to seeing it through, so please refrain from unhelpful comments or trying to talk me out of joining. I've never done a restrictive diet like this before and I'm feeling both apprehensive and excited at the same time. I'm so tired of calorie counting and weighing every morsel of food and not seeing results.

Just curious, why did the weighing and calorie counting not work for you?

I know a few people that have had good results with the ideal protein diet. Hope you do as well, OP!

I had great results. You really need to learn to phase off properly. Do not go back to your old habits or the weight will come right back. I really enjoyed getting to know new recipes and veggies. I’d suggest buying Janeava’s Ideal Cookbook.

It did work for me in the beginning, I lost about 40 pounds with calorie counting and weight watchers. I also exercise five days a week. But then I stalled about a year ago and really haven't been able to get back on track. I have not gained at all, but keep losing and gaining the same three pounds, and it's mystifying to me. I have been doing IF for about two years and started to switch things up, I realized that I could lose some weight when I dropped my calories all the way to 1000 and below, but then realized that I was also losing muscle as well. I think that a VLC diet will work for me and I think I can stick with it, but I'm not interested at all in being skinny fat and losing more muscle, so I thought a PSMF (protein sparing modified fast) would be the best route for me, and Ideal Protein is just a more controlled version of that.

Thanks pp @ 17:32. I stumbled across Janeava on Instagram and bookmarked her site, and will probably buy her cookbook during Phase 2. Since I've spent so many years carefully tracking and monitoring my food, I just want a break from all of that and I want to eat exactly what the plan tells me to. I have already done meal planning for the week, I made a batch of chicken breast and a huge pot of collard greens for my dinner. Next week I will probably do shrimp and broccolini and so on. I have no issues eating the same thing for dinner every night, so I hope that will work in my favor.

The idea of having to eat 8 ounces of protein every night for dinner has me so concerned, I've been eating 2-4 ounces for so long. Also having to eat or drink protein within an hour of waking up after intermittent fasting for so long.

You can divide your protein up. Sometimes I would have half at lunch, half at dinner.

You will lose weight if you follow it. It is boring. Their food kind of sucks and it is expensive. But you do realize how much you were overeating before.

I was successful. Have kept most of it off. But just know it is very hard to stick to it because you literally cannot cheat or it isn’t going to work.

Most of the food was disgusting. The bottled shakes, powder breakfast shakes, and most of the sweets based food items were okay.

As someone above said, you need to phase off correctly and even then weight will come back.

I got tired of the same foods since so many veggies were restricted and all fruits were in phase I.

You will definitely know when you hit ketosis because your breath will stink. I was warned about that but it was still weird when it happened.

Not looking forward to my breath stinking, but I know that it's mostly temporary. I did a diet after I had my first child in the 90s and went into ketosis and the bad breath lasted a couple of weeks and went away.

I'm prepared for the bad food, but I've been on a "diet" for a couple of years so I'm kind of used to not having full fat/full flavored food. They let us try a couple of things at the orientation, which I suspect are the best tasting foods; a protein bar, chocolate shake and some kind of fake Doritos, and they were all edible.

OP here ... the days are getting rough, but I know that the sun will break through the clouds eventually and I will be better for it.

The thing is, I'm not really hungry, I just feel wrong and empty. Does that make any sense? There's a that feeling of satiety that I get when I consume carbs that's just missing right now, and it feels unsettling.

What's the scale say?

I did keto last year and lost 10-15 pounds that I managed to keep off for a while until I derailed after New Year's due to some personal reasons. I've since introduced a regular/medium amount of carbs every day. The one thing keto taught me was being able to tell the difference between actually being hungry versus just bored and eating out of habit.

IP literally destroyed my metabolism after 5 months on it. I am still recovering after stopping a year ago.

OP - The first three days are tough but by a month I felt terrific and energized. The water is really important as is phasing off the program correctly.
It changed the way I eat and the pounds have essentially stayed off. I still follow the eating plan because I feel so much better restricting carbs to primarily vegetables. Good luck. Keep posting when you have questions or looking for food ideas.

OP I'm doing it too! I have my first appointment tomorrow. I'm really hoping this will help me shed the 15lbs that have stuck on me.

OP here, this post will be a little long.

@16:10, I haven't gotten on the scale yet, I just started on Sunday. I was supposed to have my first weigh in tomorrow, but got a notification for an event that I'd put in my calendar two months ago and forgot all about, so we pushed it back to the following Friday. Hoping for a sizable weight loss after nearly two weeks on the diet. Don't feel any different, but I'm peeing a LOT, it's unreal. I had no idea that I was so dehydrated.

PP@ 16:46, I can sympathize. I did a vegan diet a few years ago, and I've never been the same. Not only did weight loss become progressively more difficult, but I developed and was diagnosed with food allergies (strawberries, pineapple, kiwi) that I didn't have previously and still have to deal with. The human body can definitely be fickle, but I doubt most people have the terrible experiences with vegan/vegetarianism that I did, I'm sure I was an outlier.

PP@ 10:46, welcome to the club! I hope we can encourage and support each other on this journey! My husband is super supportive, but I do feel awfully alone doing this. I haven't told friends or family what I'm doing because I don't feel like the criticism and discouragement.

@22:38, thanks for the words of encouragement! I started to feel a little better yesterday! I got in all of my vitamins, all of my water, and found some low calorie high protein water that I'm able to drink in the morning so that I don't have to force down a protein shake as soon as I get up, so life was pretty good yesterday. lol I also made sure I really got in my salt intake, and my two teaspoons of fat, and I think that helped as well. I also bought a trial size bottle of flavored electrolytes that I added to my water and I'm sure that was beneficial. I am going back to the store this evening to pick up a full box.

I'm surprised at how I'm not totally disgusted by the food, except for the protein shakes, but I find ALL protein shakes to be pretty disgusting. The oatmeal is edible, but needs help. The snacks, such as the "Doritos" are very good and very filling, I almost couldn't finish the bag. I also LOVE the vanilla crispy square and I have it every evening for my snack. I know I should switch it up, but I really like it that much.

I did not like the chocolate chip pancakes at all, so I won't be reordering that. I like the chicken noodle soup, and I had the potato puree with steamed broccoli, and it was almost like broccoli soup.

The veggies were a problem the first couple of days, but I'm getting the hang of it. 2 cups of broccoli or cauliflower isn't much at all and much better to get down than say, two cups of collard greens.
Still, I have to say that the vegetables and the water is the worst part of this protocol, because I'm not used to consuming so much of either.

I'm the PP that is starting IP. I joined a group on FB called "janeva's ideal recipes cookbook - phase 1". It has a lot of recipes and encouraging posts. I also found walden farm salad dressings at Harris Teeter which are 0 calorie dressings that a lot of IP dieters use. Also I read people supplement the day with pickles to curb their appetite.
