And Bruce Springsteen's daughter went to Duke. But I think she's legit smart, though. Plus she's an equestrian, a good hook for the 1%. |
I understand why the employee who received the bribes get to go to jail. In what way is it illegal for the parents to bribe the coach (or whoever)?
Say I go to an Apple store and bribe the cashier there something to set aside a new iPhone on the day it comes out, how am I doing anything illegal? Understand what the clerk is doing IS illegal but that's not my problem, is it??? Serious question guys, don't go off on tangents.. |
Meadow Soprano got into Columbia, somehow. You think Tony paid handsomely for that? |
OMG! Look folks one of the dummies whose parents bought her way into college. |
This is definitely a thing including here in DC-land. It's such a scam. I teach an honors level science class to mostly high school juniors. Across 90 kids, I started with about 10 kids with 504 plans for extended time, only two of whom actually need it and actually have some learning challenges. And amazingly, this fall, as juniors, I had 5 additional kids qualify for 504 plans due to "anxiety". They all had straight As, no educational impact. Like seriously? What BS. You clearly just want extended time on your ACT/SAT tests. It's a total parental scam and it pisses me off. |
Example of a tangent.. |
Meadow was actually smart. However, if I remember the storyline correctly, it was Carmela that intimidated someone into writing a recommendation for her. |
If any of you haven’t read the book “The Price of Admission” by Daniel Golden, I highly recommend you do so. Eye-opening and sickening info on how wealthy buy college admission. Brown and Duke are particularly bad.
Here is NYT book review: https://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/17/books/review/Wolff2.t.html And Wiki: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Price_of_Admission |
Lots of colleges go easy on VIP’s, but it doesn’t mean there is a bribe involved. |
Mail fraud. |
And here is video of author talking about book: https://www.c-span.org/video/?194456-1/the-price-admission I remember Ralph Lauren’s kids were profiled on their suspect admission to Duke. Brown was favorite for Hollywood celebs. |
As for the Apple analogy it would be commercial bribery in 36 states

You're stupid. You're basically saying if a mob boss asked an underling to kill someone, because he didn't physically commit the crime he shouldn't be arrested for coercion and conspiracy to commit murder? PLEASE. The parents knowingly committed the crime of: - Falsifying their kids test scores - Purchasing a spot of admittance in what is supposed to be a merit-based application process - Bribing inter-state officials - Hiding their payments as a charity donation (committing a felony) - Wire fraud and mail fraud in doing so They deserve everything that is coming to them. |
But if the transaction never involved mail - meaning a hand to hand transfer of cash for a slot with no documentation to support it, what law has been broken if it is a non-public school? DP, btw. How is this any different than sliding gifts to the membership committee at a country club? |
I am surprised there weren't more.
I doubt any of them will got to jail and most will probably be let off with a misdemeanor at most. Hopefully the schools will take action and remove the students. How did they uncover the scheme? |
