I know that the next crop of celebrities will be thinking twice about bribery for their no-talent offspring to get into good schools.

Courtney Cox has a 14-year-old and I'm pretty sure she'll be telling her straight to her face - get the grades or you're going to community college because I'm not going to jail for you.

This case is about more than just Hoffman and Loughlin, its about setting an example.

I think ppl who aspire single-mindedly to the Ivy league schools have a classic correlation not causation problem. Ivy league schools serve rich, connected students whose parents smooth their path to enrollment through years of coaching, test-prep and carefully selected activities (Lacrosse, squash anyone?!). Ivy league graduates become rich, elite adults bc of their family's wealth and connections, not their college degree (correlation not causation). This kind of cheating isn’t just restricted to the wealthy.

I know a MC family who had their child fake a learning disorder to get more time on tests and the ability to take tests in a quiet room alone. The mom bragged about it when she had a little too much wine one evening at a dinner party. Four of us heard it and when confronted, she laughed in our faces and said no one would believe something like that. Her kid graduated last year and is at UChicago. Still getting those accommodations, I’m sure.

The cheating folks discussed didn't get accommodations just for extra time, they got them so they could use a fake proctor and alter scores. Extra time doesn't help that much if you don't have a learning disorder that requires extra time.

I know a Rhodes Scholar with a degenerative disease but in college s/he used that to request extra time on ALL exams in college and even got to take in-class exams at home in the privacy of their dorm on the honor system.

It was pretty ridiculous.

The Georgetown men’s and women’s tennis coach was kicked out a year ago for “admission irregularities” and ended up as the women’s coach at the U of Rhode Island. He apparently accepted over $2 million over 5 or so years as bribes to let in a couple of kids a year. Apparently, every coach has “slots” available to them for admissions and some saw it as a personal asset. You can bet this is going to get bigger.

My SLAC alma mater receives between $10-20 million in donations a year. Some are from foundations. 500k would be a huge donation.

These people were caught because they're morons and went about it a terrible way. I'm sure that a $500k donation to USC would have gotten both of her girls in with no seedy bribery needed. My uncle donated $250k to his alma mater, a school in the same league as USC, to get my loser cousin admitted. Then, when he was nearly put on academic probation, he donated the $100k needed to secure a new charter bus for one of the sports no one really cared about, and bam, his grades increased enough to keep him off probation.

Donations for admittance and good grades is not a new or foreign concept at all.

I bet Lori's girls even had knowledge that their mom did this. USC is seen as the It College for all CA YouTuber's and the offspring of many hollywood elite. Stanford is a better school, no doubt, but Palo Alto doesn't have the same draw.

You are very very far off USC is loaded and $500k donation is nothing. I graduated there almost 20 years ago as even then $500k wouldn’t get you an automatic in
