Girl Raped at Rockville HS

Anonymous
The problem with everyone flipping out about the age of the rapist is that we already have 18 year-olds in high school. We have native-born 19 year-olds in high school as well.

So, the issue here isn't really the age, is it? It's his background. He's 18, like a lot of other kids in high school, but foreign.

So, what to do about it? Ban Latinx 18 year-olds from high school? That's almost certainly not legal.

Of course it is not just about his age. It's the fact that he didn't speak any English and really did not belong at the school with access to young girls.

But yes, obviously there are other factors - security in schools being huge for me.

Guess the topic.. A resolution to condemn Trump's proposed budget.

Guess that's more important than school safety!

These things are not unrelated. Programming for at risk youth faces enormous cuts in the proposed budget.

We know that federal law mandates these young people be educated. We also know that people would HOWL if the county dedicated a single high school to recent immigrants transitioning to the US school system. So...what is MCPS supposed to do? They can't bar people based on immigration status, and they don't have funding for specialized programs.

Who is going to howl if the county dedicates learning spaces to recent immigrants? I wouldn't, I would be ecstatic.

Oh, come on. Folks already bring up the cost of educating immigrants in every single thread about school funding. Having a whole separate high school would be a major cost center.

It doesn't need to be an entire school. Depending on how many we're talking about, it could be an all purpose room in another government building where they are taught English and life skills. I think it would be a cost savings and it would help with resource allocation.

A GED class would be a better setting for educating an 18 year-old undocumented immigrant who does not speak English. Placing an 18 year-old child with 14 year olds was a stupid move by MoCo.

So where should he live?

Um, let me see, IN HIS ORIGINAL COUNTRY WITH HIS PARENTS.

So, ban Latino (male) 18-year-olds who don't speak English? I don't have crime data, but as I recall from being a young girl in school, Latino(male) 18-year-olds who don't speak English were not the only threat to the safety of young girls. Or even (in my experience) the predominant threat.

Given that you know nothing about his circumstances in his original country, or whether he even has living parents, that seems like an odd thing to eyeroll about.

Yes, a big part is his age. It's not that he's 18 in HIgh School though. Many kids are. It's the fact that he's 18 in 9th grade! This MAN has a deportation status on him and was allowed to enroll as a 9th grader. If he even makes it through high school, he would be a 22 year old man. That is not normal.

No, he wouldn't, because 21 is the maximum age.

And yes, it's not normal, but so what? Do we only allow things that are normal (defined how?)?

As for him being a MAN, do you refer to all 18-year-olds as MEN (and WOMEN)? I don't.

No. He was 18 and he was a freshman. And he had a deportation order against me. In this particular case, he had no reason to be allowed access to young girls.

There was even a post earlier that the reason he had the order was because of prior sexual assault.

Again, this is not a theoretical discussion. This is a discussion about what went wrong that led to this girl being brutally raped in the bathroom at school.

Yes, he's an adult- a man. An adult that has a deportation order against him and MCPS allowed him to enroll as a 9th grader in a classroom with 14 year olds. Do you not see the issue with that?

How would MCPS know about a deportation order? MCPS does not do immigration enforcement, nor is it even allowed to. Other than the deportation order, no, I don't see an issue with an 18-year-old male person in a school with 14-year-old people.

Normal is not raping a 14 year old vaginally and anally and walking out of the bathroom as if he just took a crap.

Yes, we all agree about that. Nobody is disagreeing with that.
