Totally agree. We watched from home as well, and the stealth bomber even flew over our neighborhood!! It was completely awe-inspiring. I wish they'd do this every year.

Here's the weird thing . . . there is always a big turnout for the Fourth of July in DC and there is always a parade, fireworks, etc. It is not usually "hosted" by the president as it has always been organized by other groups. I believe that the parade was the same as always. The Capitol Fourth was the same as always. Trump "rebranded" the event by saying "he" hosted it. That was highly offensive to many people since this is not a "hostable" event. It's an event that nobody "owns". It belongs to the people.

No. No other President has made the Washington DC Independence Day celebration about him. They haven't given speeches. They haven't forced the military to put on a show for them. They haven't handed out VIP tickets to political cronies and supporters. They all left us alone to enjoy the parade, concert, and fireworks without forcing anyone to choose sides politically. He just cannot leave anything alone. He has to make everything about him. It diminished the DC Independence Day celebration and it diminished the military to see them become his puppets.

Just the President and the people he controls. It was political. Yes, this was the annoying part. We didn't need Trump to have our usual celebration here in DC (which we all love). He made it more partisan and caused a lot of discussion about himself (which he loves to do) when it was totally unnecessary. What was the point of it? Did he make it more enjoyable for anyone? No. Did he cause further divisions instead of unity? Yes. Was it unseemly? Yes, totally. Plus it took 2.5 million away from the national parks budget. It makes me think even less of him (but then again, I agree that other things he has done have been much, much worse so oh, well). Trump has to Trump.

This and also while I was relieved that he read the speechwriter ‘s speech off the TelePrompTer and did not ad lib I am still upset by the focus on the military on Independence Day. July 4th is about the ideals and principles that make us such a special and exceptional country in human history. These are the ideals our great military fights to protect (it is what inspires our military) and they are the greatest source of our strength both internally as well as abroad. It is what distinguishes us from other countries that have strong militaries and/nuclear weapons. July 4 is a day that is normally free of politics and is a joyful celebration of the idea of America. There are other opportunities to honor our wonderful military including Memorial Day. We could also have put on a military show with flyovers etc. to commemorate the DDay anniversary

Reread the bolded. The military display was entirely appropriate, for the reasons you just stated. Most Americans are enormously proud of our military and yesterday was an exciting way to honor all branches.

So, instead of admitting they were wrong, and congratulating him for a patriotic event that went off pretty well considering all the logistics involved, they are looking for petty things to pick at.
