Dear middle-aged women: capri pants do nothing for you.

This thread put a smile on my face. I remember it from past years. It's reassuring to have it back again. Like we're almost back to normal....

PS. I've started eyeing some capris for my summer wardrobe.

I went to an event today and many men and women in their 40s and 50s were in attendance. Most of the men wore polo shirts tucked in under their pot bellies and shorts.

Nearly all the women wore capri pants. Capri pants do nothing for you. If you are short, you don't look good in capri pants. If you are fat, you don't look good in capri pants. If you are tall, you don't look good in capri pants. If you are thin, you don't look good in capri pants. No matter the body type or age, capri pants are not flattering.

I say this lovingly. Wear anything else- anything! Shorts (long shorts, if you want to; even short shorts look better than capris), a skirt, pants, anything but capri pants. They make everyone look stumpy and shapeless. No one looks good in them.

I disagree. I'm in my fifties and I look horrible in shorts; any kind of shorts. I'm short and really wide hips but skinny legs. I don't wear capris but wish they would come back in style because they look better on me than anything else.

I burst out laughing when I saw this thread had popped up again.

What exactly do you mean by capris? True capris that hit just a bit below the knee? Or cropped pants? I agree that no one looks good in true capris. But slightly cropped pants can look very chic. My mom, who is 77 but looks 60, is 5’4 and slim and athletic and lives in a warm climate. She typically wears cropped pants (often with a folded hem) and looks great.

Agree with this! A loose, slightly cropped pant is a very popular look among middle age and older women in Japan and other parts of Asia. I’ve always liked the look and duplicate it often. Looks great with a casual flat sandal, a tank, and a cropped jacket or cardigan. Not trendy or sexy, but easy and classic.

I actually agree with OP about true capris that hit right at the widest part of the calf. Especially when the pants are fitted. It chops you off in a very unflattering way, unless you have very slim legs. I’ve noticed in recent years that a lot of people are wearing Capri leggings with detailing (stripes or a mesh panel) at the hem and that’s even worse.

I disagree it looks bad on thin women though. Depends on the woman and how she does it, but slender women really can look good in anything. It’s unfair.

Same here.

I welcome this thread but it always reminds me of Tim Gunn in his too tight suits. Waaaay to young for you Tim!

Me too! But it's only 42 pages? In my memory it was longer than the T**mp Women Fashion Disasters thread.

And for synergy, here's Vanky in capris. Yep, they look effing dumb

I’m not a huge fan of capris or Ivanka’s style, but I agree.

I think capris look soooo cute on younger people. I saw somebody wearing them with a long-sleeve slightly cropped blouse and it was adorable. I am sure the right older person could pull it off as well.

I find this outfit confusing because the jacket/top looks like it's for cold weather but the capris look like they are for warm weather.

^^^ Lol. Same. Hmmm, should I dress for winter or summer?

At least they cover up the cellulite and varicose veins (and I'm speaking for myself here as much as for anyone else). Shorts are worse, IMO.

This. I promise you I look (much) worse in shorts than capri pants. But full length pants are HOT in the summer. So I wear capri pants. Sorry. It isn't that I think they look good on me. It is a lesser of the evils sort of thing.

This is why I’m glad I moved away from DMV. Now I live on the west coast and I can wear PANTS in the summer.
