Where does Blair practice? Whitman + TBC are out of Georgetown Boat House. Any kid who rowed out of the Georgetown Boathouse would recognize him. |
Except that he was, according to my kids who graduated a couple of years ago, a really good, committed teacher of AP history. They said they were really surprised but not downright shocked. They didn’t think he was creepy, but definitely a bit more focused on girl students than boys. They have friends who were on crew who felt the same. Everyone’s texts are blowing up right now. |
| I’m the poster who posted about the teacher with the erection. This was not just a quick thing that he tried to hide. My daughter was in one of the classes. She told me right away when she got home. She wasn’t one of the girls who went to the administration, but after nothing was done I wanted to pursue it (he had used innuendo and made inappropriate comments). My daughter was a freshman and was insistent that I not take it further. I respected her wishes. |
Yeah ok 👌 |

They practiced out of Bladensburg at the time, but she may have predated him. However, my kids knew coaches from other schools not at Bladensburg. |
Truly men are the downfall of society. Such disgusting behavior. |
I guess you want to get rid of the majority of coaches? |
This |
I would be careful about generalizations and stereotypes. We are at a low income cluster, with lots of FARMS/ESOL families. They spend that easily on travel soccer/volleyball for their kids. Don’t assume that only wealthy families value sports. |
I agree |
| I know several rowers including this coach. I’m surprised by this news and saddened by it. |

The article in the post offers more explanation. Apparently he had an illegal relationship with a girl after she had turned 18 though still a student at whitman..

For legal reasons, MCPS is distancing Whitman Crew from the school, but we all know that, while it is a club sport, the school still took credit and prominently featured the accomplishments of the Whitman Crew.
And the club sports absolutely are allowed to recruit during student orientation sessions, etc. |
I think it’s really important that parents read the charges. It’s eye-opening as to the way Shipley (like other perpetrators) used his position as a teacher and coach to groom these girls for extensive periods of time prior to starting the abuse. It’s also eye-opening about how social media was used - snap chat and texts and g chat. Reading that made me glad i still monitor my kids phone even though they are in HS. It’s also time for school and sports to have more explicit rules around conduct - door open policies, no one on one contact, no contact between teachers and students outside of monitored email or group chats, no private texting, no private car rides, no commenting on body or touching of any kind, etc. Plus explicit methods of reporting abuse. Many outside kids groups have these rules - why not MCPS and coaching? |
