Whitman Teacher and Crew Coach Arrested

Shipley pled guilty and was sentenced to 5 years of incarceration, with 2 suspended. He was forced to surrender immediately for incarceration at his sentencing. I don’t have a cite, but the WaPO wrote an article about his sentencing hearing, the victim impact statements and his own statements.

The sentencing was in fall 2022.

I don't know about systemic changes. There were also accusations against another teacher and coach but I don't know what became of that.

Maryland's age of consent is 16. Shipley had sex with his 17-year-old student before she graduated. He also exchanged sexually explicit photos with another 17-year-old victim.

I think he would be free if the first victim was not his student, or if he waited until she graduated, and if he avoided incriminating photos.

The damning detail is that he was grooming these girls while they were his students, and probably many others too.
