I think it’s really important that parents read the charges. It’s eye-opening as to the way Shipley (like other perpetrators) used his position as a teacher and coach to groom these girls for extensive periods of time prior to starting the abuse. It’s also eye-opening about how social media was used - snap chat and texts and g chat. Reading that made me glad i still monitor my kids phone even though they are in HS.

It’s also time for school and sports to have more explicit rules around conduct - door open policies, no one on one contact, no contact between teachers and students outside of monitored email or group chats, no private texting, no private car rides, no commenting on body or touching of any kind, etc. Plus explicit methods of reporting abuse. Many outside kids groups have these rules - why not MCPS and coaching?

Nipples erect for a woman are NOT necessarily indicative of sexual excitation. Could it be? Yes, but that is HARDLY in the same league as a male teacher sporting an erection in front of girls in a gym class or exercise setting of any kind - there's little doubt, shy of certain medications, about a male, his erection, and what's going through his mind at the time. The things that otherwise tend to cause nipple erection for men and women work quite the opposite on erections, cold, for example.

The arrest affidavit alleges that Shipley flirted with the teenager and started a sexual relationship with her in 2018, after she had turned 18 but before she had graduated.
The criminal complaint identifies a second student who told police she had a sexual relationship with Shipley starting in 2013, after she had graduated but while she was 17.

Students will always develop a crush on their professors, but professors cannot in any circumstance begin any relationship with a student, specially if they are minors. Professors take advantage of students who have a crush on them.

Even the President of the U.S. thought it was OK to have a relationship with an intern…

And the reports (previous PPs) that other girls on the team aren't surprised, or even knew? He probably oozed smarmy behavior....uggh. Sadly, predators can maneuver in ways that make everyone know something's off (and indicating that something is truly wrong somewhere), but can't put their finger on it. Especially for teens...they are trusting and respectful of adults/authority figures and it would probably take a lot more for them to have the courage to call someone out (eg report to parents) based on suspicion alone.

PP here: Exactly. Trust me, when my daughter told me I really wanted there to be another explanation. Maybe he accidentally took a Viagra? But a responsible adult would call in sick or find another way to conceal it.

The other girl had left whitman but at the time of the abuse she was still a minor

What the school needs to do now and going forward is to hire an external investigator to investigate and identify other teachers who groom students, those who make inappropriate comments, and those who behave inappropriately in front of the students.

The school has a passive attitude of waiting to see if there are reports as opposed to preventing sexual abuse, assault, and harassment. The school should take it more seriously since these students are minors.

The 17 year old is 25 … I would like to point out that the statute of limitations 4 years ago would have expired. The law changed recently thanks to “The keepers” a documentary and a representation from southern md.

They are still working on making laws to support victims.

I am enraged. From the court documents it seems the girls actually believed he loved them and cared for them. But he was actually grooming them..

This is a fabulous idea. I would happily spearhead this effort at Whitman. Any advice on how to go about it?
